  4. 4

We did not hear of this in the latter-day creed. This is nothing but a fabrication.

  8. 8

Has the Reminder been sent down to him out of [all of] us?’ Indeed, they are in doubt concerning My Reminder. Indeed, they have not yet tasted My punishment.

  9. 9

Do they possess the treasuries of the mercy of your Lord, the All-mighty, the All-munificent?

  10. 10

Do they own the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them? [If so,] let them ascend [to the higher spheres] by the means [of ascension].

[They are but] a host routed out there of the factions.

Synthesis: Sūrat Ṣād 1–11

Triangulating five Shīʿī tafsīrs present for this opening passage: Ṭabarsī (Majmaʿ al-Bayān) [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan], al-Qummī (Tafsīr al-Qummī) [qummi], al-Ṭūsī (al-Tibyān) [tusi_al_tibyan], al-Baḥrānī (al-Burhān) [bahrani_al_burhan], and al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī (al-Mīzān) [tabatabai_al_mizan], plus the published English Enlightening Commentary.

What the passage says. The sūra opens with the disjoined letter Ṣād and an oath "by the Qurʾān, possessor of remembrance" (v.1), then pivots — "nay" — to the deniers locked "in pride and schism" (v.2), warns by the destroyed generations who cried out when "it was no time of escape" (v.3), and reports Mecca's astonishment that a human warner arose among them, branding him "a lying sorcerer" who collapsed the many gods into One (vv.4–5). The chiefs walk off urging steadfastness to the idols, calling the call "a thing intended," unheard-of "in the latter creed," mere "fabrication" (vv.6–7); they deny revelation singling out him, are met with "nay, they are in doubt of My remembrance… they have not yet tasted My punishment" (v.8), challenged over whether they hold the "treasuries of mercy" or the "dominion of the heavens" — then "let them ascend by the means" (vv.9–10) — and dismissed as "a [paltry] host, there, defeated, of the confederates" (v.11).

The letter Ṣād. All four span/narration sources record the spread of opinion: a name of the sūra; a name of God by which He swore (Ibn ʿAbbās, "related from al-Ṣādiq"); "He spoke truly" (al-Ḍaḥḥāk); a name of the Qurʾān (Qatāda); or a command from muṣādāt, "set the Qurʾān against your deeds" (al-Ḥasan, reading Ṣādi) — so Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and al-Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan] in near-identical terms. Distinctively, al-Baḥrānī [bahrani_al_burhan] carries the Shīʿī Ascension traditions — Ṣād as a spring beneath the Throne, the "Water of Life," from which the Prophet performed his heavenly ablution (Imam al-Ṣādiq via Sufyān al-Thawrī; Imam al-Kāẓim via Isḥāq b. ʿAmmār; Imam al-Ṣādiq via Ibn Udhayna). al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī [tabatabai_al_mizan] reports the same in his baḥth riwāʾī (citing al-Kāfī, ʿIlal, Maʿānī al-Akhbār) while, in his bayān, reading v.1 simply as an oath parallel to Yā Sīn/Qāf/Nūn, with the implied answer "indeed you are among the warners."

The oath's answer and the grammar. Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and al-Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan] catalogue five views on the jawāb al-qasam — elided (most eloquent), "Ṣād" itself (= ṣadaqa), supplied by "bal alladhīna kafarū" (Qatāda), "kam ahlaknā" (al-Farrāʾ/al-Zajjāj, which Ṭabarsī faults since the oath-lām cannot govern an object), or the sūra's closing "takhāṣum ahl al-nār" (al-Kisāʾī). al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī [tabatabai_al_mizan] sets these aside as mostly without substance and fixes the answer by sense. Both classical works dwell on wa-lāta ḥīna manāṣ: + an emphatic tāʾ, functioning like laysa, governing only ḥīn, with manāṣ from nāṣa yanūṣu ("draw back," vs. bāṣa yabūṣu, "advance") — the accusative reading meaning "the time is not a time of escape." External cross-check confirms this is the mainstream (al-jumhūr) analysis.

The sabab al-nuzūl. The narration-driven sources converge on the Quraysh delegation to Abū Ṭālib: al-Qummī [qummi] and al-Baḥrānī [bahrani_al_burhan] (the latter via Imam al-Bāqir in al-Kāfī) give the scene where the chiefs stop their ears at "lā ilāha illā Llāh"; al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī [tabatabai_al_mizan] reproduces both al-Kāfī and al-Qummī versions. Uniquely, Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] names the twenty-five notables — al-Walīd b. al-Mughīra (eldest), Abū Jahl, the sons of Khalaf, the sons of Rabīʿa, al-Naḍr b. al-Ḥārith — and preserves the Prophet's weeping vow about the sun and moon. al-Baḥrānī adds the al-Riḍā/al-Maʾmūn dialogue defending prophetic ʿiṣma (the "sin" of al-Fatḥ 2 = his standing in the polytheists' eyes) and ʿAlī's Qāṣiʿa-sermon tree-miracle, foretelling "one who will marshal the confederates."

Divergence on v.11's aḥzāb. Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] reports v.11 chiefly as a foretelling of Badr (Qatāda: "hunālika" = the slaughter-grounds of Badr), noting a secondary view of al-Khandaq. al-Qummī [qummi] and al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī's [tabatabai_al_mizan] baḥth riwāʾī gloss the aḥzāb as those who allied against the Prophet on the Day of the Trench/Confederates. al-Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan] reads "min al-aḥzāb" as "the faction of Iblīs and his followers," and al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī's bayān stresses the diminutive ("what a paltry host"), counting them defeated-in-advance among the routed confederate nations. al-Ṭūsī also flags a kalām aside at v.6 — the deniers' false "patience upon their gods" refuting the claim that rational cognitions are innate. The sources are reported here as they stand; no madhhab dispute is adjudicated.
