When you journey in the land, there is no sin upon you in shortening the prayers, if you fear that the faithless may trouble you; indeed the faithless are your manifest enemies.
When you are among them, leading them in prayers, let a group of them stand with you, carrying their weapons. And when they have done the prostrations, let them withdraw to the rear, then let the other group which has not prayed come and pray with you, taking their precautions and [bearing] their weapons. The faithless are eager that you should be oblivious of your weapons and your baggage, so that they could assault you all at once. But there is no sin upon you, if you are troubled by rain or are sick, to set aside your weapons; but take your precautions. Indeed Allah has prepared for the faithless a humiliating punishment.
When you have finished the prayers, remember Allah, standing, sitting, and lying down, and when you feel secure, perform the [complete] prayers, for the prayer is indeed a timed prescription for the faithful.
Do not slacken in the pursuit of these people. If you are suffering, they are also suffering like you, but you expect from Allah what they do not expect, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.
Indeed We have sent down to you the Book with the truth, so that you may judge between the people by what Allah has shown you; do not be an advocate for the traitors,
and plead to Allah for forgiveness; indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
And do not plead for those who betray themselves; indeed Allah does not like someone who is treacherous and sinful.
They try to hide [their real character] from people, but they do not try to hide from Allah, though He is with them when they conspire overnight with a discourse that He does not approve of. And Allah comprehends whatever they do.
Aha! There you are, pleading for them in the life of this world! But who will plead for them with Allah on the Day of Resurrection, or will be their defender?
Whoever commits evil or wrongs himself and then pleads to Allah for forgiveness, will find Allah all-forgiving, all-merciful.
Whoever commits a sin, commits it only against himself; and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.
But someone who commits an iniquity or sin and then accuses an innocent person of it, is indeed guilty of calumny and a flagrant sin.
Were it not for Allah’s grace and His mercy on you, a group of them were bent on leading you astray; but they do not mislead anyone except themselves, and they cannot do you any harm. Allah has sent down to you the Book and wisdom, and He has taught you what you did not know, and great is Allah’s grace upon you.
There is no good in much of their secret talks, excepting him who enjoins charity or what is right or reconciliation between people, and whoever does that, seeking Allah’s pleasure, soon We shall give him a great reward.
Whoever defies the Apostle, after the guidance has become manifest to him, and follows a way other than that of the faithful, We shall abandon him to his devices and We shall make him enter hell, and it is an evil destination.
English translation: Ali Quli Qarai
Sources triangulated: Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan]; Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan]; Baḥrānī, al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan]; al-Qummī [qummi]; Ṭabāṭabāʾī, al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan]; An Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary]. All six are present (non-silent).
The passage legislates the wartime prayer — shortening it in travel (v.101) and the special congregational 'prayer of fear' with its precautions (vv.102–104) — then turns to justice and integrity: the Book is sent to judge by truth, and the Prophet is forbidden to plead for the treacherous, illustrated by the Banū Ubayriq theft and false accusation (vv.105–112); it affirms God's protection of the Prophet from their scheming (v.113), commends only the secret counsel that enjoins charity, kindness or reconciliation (v.114), and warns whoever opposes the Messenger and the believers' way (v.115).
1. Shortening the prayer (v.101). All four Arabic sources read the shortening as of the prayer's number in travel; Ṭabarsī, Ṭūsī and (via narration) al-Burhān and al-Qummī carry the Imāmī position that it is obligatory, with ʿAlī's list of the habitual rovers who do not shorten. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [tusi_al_tibyan] [qummi] [bahrani_al_burhan]
2. The prayer of fear (vv.102–104). All sources expound the two-party congregational method and the precaution against the enemy's assault; Ṭabarsī and al-Qummī anchor it in the Khālid-b.-al-Walīd standoff, and all read 'a timed prescription' as the fixed obligation of prayer. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [tusi_al_tibyan] [qummi] [tabatabai_al_mizan] [enlightening_commentary]
3. The Banū Ubayriq affair (vv.105–112). Ṭabarsī, Ṭūsī, al-Qummī, al-Burhān and the English sources all anchor the prohibition of defending the treacherous in the same narrative — the theft, the framing of the innocent Labīd, and the revelation correcting the near-miscarriage of judgement. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [qummi] [bahrani_al_burhan] [tabatabai_al_mizan] [enlightening_commentary]
4. Worthy secret counsel (v.114). All read 'no good in much of their najwā save [enjoining] charity, kindness or reconciliation'; Ṭabarsī and al-Qummī add al-Ṣādiq's 'forbearance' and ʿAlī's striking 'the zakāt of your standing.' [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [qummi]
'The believers' way' and the ijmāʿ question (v.115). This is the passage's one doctrinal fault-line. Where the threat against 'following other than the believers' way' is read by many as a proof that the community's consensus binds, Ṭabarsī and Ṭūsī resist that inference and read 'the believers' as the truly-faithful, infallible Imāms of the House of Muḥammad, while also noting the threat joins both opposing the Messenger and departing his way. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [tusi_al_tibyan] [bahrani_al_burhan] The English sources keep the broader reading. [tabatabai_al_mizan] [enlightening_commentary] This Imāmī reading is recorded here as what the sources argue, not as endorsed interpretation. Otherwise the six sources are in close agreement throughout this largely juristic and narrative passage.
