The verses

  1. 12

The day you will see the faithful, men and women, with their light moving swiftly in front of them and on their right, [and they are greeted with the words:] ‘There is good news for you today! Gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever]. That is the great success.’

  2. 13

The day the hypocrites, men and women, will say to the faithful, ‘Please wait, that we may glean something from your light!’ They will be told: ‘Go back and grope for light!’ Then there will be set up between them a wall with a gate, with mercy within and punishment without.

  3. 14

They will call out to them, ‘Did we not use to be with you?’ They will say, ‘Yes! But you cast yourselves into perdition. You awaited and were skeptical, and [false] hopes deceived you until the edict of Allah came, and the Deceiver deceived you concerning Allah.

  4. 15

So today no ransom shall be taken from you or the faithless. The Fire will be your abode: it is your [ultimate] refuge and an evil destination.’

  5. 16

Is it not time yet for those who have faith that their hearts should be humbled for Allah’s remembrance and toward the truth which has come down [to them], and to be not like those who were given the Book before? Time took its toll on them and so their hearts were hardened, and many of them are transgressors.

  6. 17

Know that Allah revives the earth after its death. We have certainly made the signs clear for you, so that you may exercise your reason.

  7. 18

Indeed the charitable men and women and those who lend Allah a good loan—it shall be multiplied for them, and there will be a noble reward for them.

  8. 19

Those who have faith in Allah and His apostles—it is they who are the truthful and witnesses with their Lord; they shall have their reward and their light. But as for those who are faithless and deny Our signs, they shall be the inmates of hell.

Al-Ḥadīd 12-19 — The Light of the Believers and the Wall

The passage stages the Resurrection as a drama of light. You shall see the believing men and women, their light running before them and on their right hands, greeted with good tidings… gardens beneath which rivers flow (v.12); the hypocrites beg Wait for us that we may borrow of your light and are turned back — a wall is set between them, with a gate, its inner side mercy, its outer side torment (v.13); Were we not with you?Yes, but you tempted yourselves (v.14); no ransom (v.15). Then the address turns inward: Has the time not come for the believers' hearts to be humbled… not to be like those given the Book before, whose term was prolonged so their hearts hardened (v.16); God revives the earth after its death (v.17); the almsgivers (v.18); the truthful and the witnesses (v.19).

On the plain sense the classical trio agree. al-Ṭabarsī, al-Ṭūsī and the Enlightening Commentary read the light as the light of faith on the Path, graded by deeds — al-Ṭabarsī preserving Qatāda's and Ibn Masʿūd's vivid images (a light like a mountain, or only on the thumb, flickering) — and read the wall's two faces as Paradise within and the Fire without. al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī identifies the wall with the Aʿrāf, treats verse 16 as the point where the address widens to include the People of the Book, and reads the truthful and the witnesses (v.19) as the believers being joined to that rank, citing Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib's «the believers of my nation are martyrs.»

Verse 17 and verse 19 become the seam where a Shīʿī layer enters — and here the sources are cross-woven. Both the Enlightening Commentary (citing al-Ṭabarsī) and al-Ṭabarsī himself carry al-Bāqir's teaching that one who awaits the Imam is like one martyred with the Prophet, and both, with al-Baḥrānī, read God revives the earth through the establishment of justice by the Mahdī. al-Baḥrānī pushes furthest: the light becomes the Imāms of the believers; the wall-and-gate is «revealed concerning us and our Shīʿa and the unbelievers,» with the ‘four banners’ report naming Muʿāwiya, ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ and Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī as the community's «Pharaoh, Sāmirī and Jāthalīq,» and the Prophet as the wall with ʿAlī its gate; the term is the age of the Occultation, and the truthful are ʿAlī and the Shīʿa. al-Qummī more soberly insists that no ransom concerns «the people of the qibla,» not Jews or Christians — i.e. Muslim hypocrites. These companion-critical and walāya readings, concentrated in al-Baḥrānī, are recorded strictly as attributed and flagged for review; the classical sources hold them within the plain rebuke to hard hearts.
