Sūrah 58 · Āyāt 1419

The verses

  1. 14

Have you not regarded those who befriend a people at whom Allah is wrathful? They neither belong to you, nor to them, and they swear false oaths [that they are with you] and they know.

  2. 15

Allah has prepared a severe punishment for them. Evil indeed is what they used to do.

  3. 16

They make a shield of their oaths and bar [people] from the way of Allah; so there is a humiliating punishment for them.

  4. 17

Their possessions and children will not avail them in any way against Allah. They shall be the inmates of the Fire and they shall remain in it [forever].

  5. 18

The day when Allah will raise them all together, they will swear to Him, just like they swear to you [now], supposing that they stand on something. Look! They are indeed liars!

  6. 19

Satan has prevailed upon them, so he has caused them to forget the remembrance of Allah. They are Satan’s confederates. Look! Indeed, it is Satan’s confederates who are the losers!

Al-Mujadila 14-19 — The Party of Satan: Hypocrisy, False Oaths, and Defeat

The sura now turns to those who 'befriend a people upon whom God is angered' — hypocrites allied with the Jews — and builds toward the verdict that they are hizb al-shaytan, the party of Satan and the losers.

Neither of you nor of them (vv.14-16). Al-Mizan reads the diagnosis with precision: the hypocrites waver 'between that, to neither these nor those' (4:143), so outwardly 'neither of you nor of them,' yet in truth joined to whom they befriend, since 'whoever befriends them is of them' (5:51). Their false oaths are 'a shield' (junna) against suspicion, by which they bar others from God's way. Tabarsi and Tusi expound the same: the oaths ward off doubt, their wealth and children avail nothing, and they are 'companions of the Fire, abiding.'

Swearing even before God (vv.17-19). The chilling image is that on the Day of Resurrection they will swear falsely to God 'as they swear to you.' Al-Mizan connects this to 6:23 ('by God, we were not polytheists'): their habituation to lying oaths becomes a fixed disposition that surfaces even in the Hereafter — 'as they live they die, as they die they are raised.' Tabarsi and Tusi weigh al-Hasan's view that the Resurrection has different 'stations,' in some of which such dazed lying remains possible. The passage seals their fate: 'Satan has gained mastery (istahwadha) over them and made them forget God's remembrance — those are the party of Satan, the losers.'

Two registers of reading. The plain-sense sources (al-Mizan, Tabarsi, Tusi) treat the passage as a general portrait of Medinan hypocrisy, and al-Mizan's long excursus on 'I shall surely prevail' (v.21) — victory by proof, by unseen support against past nations, and by the very nature of unconditional faith — is one of the finest set-pieces in the sura, candidly noting that the Muslim conquests halted 'only when intentions corrupted' and dominion replaced piety (8:53). The two Imami narration-sources, Qummi and Bahrani, instead apply verses 14-18 concretely: 'it came down about the second one,' about those who 'swore not to return the wilaya to the Banu Hashim' and 'plotted to kill the Messenger at al-'Aqaba,' linked to 9:74; Bahrani adds the seventy-three-sects hadith from Sulaym b. Qays. These identifications are recorded strictly as attributed to Qummi and Bahrani and are flagged for human review; they are absent from the other three sources, which read the hypocrites without naming Companions.
