Muhammad is but an apostle; [other] apostles have passed before him. If he dies or is slain, will you turn back on your heels? Anyone who turns back on his heels, will not harm Allah in the least, and soon Allah will reward the grateful.
No soul may die except by Allah’s leave, at an appointed time. Whoever desires the reward of this world, We will give him of it; and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter, We will give him of it; and soon We will reward the grateful.
How many a prophet there has been with whom a multitude of godly men fought. They did not falter for what befell them in the way of Allah, neither did they weaken, nor did they abase themselves; and Allah loves the steadfast.
All that they said was, ‘Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our excesses in our affairs, make our feet steady, and help us against the faithless lot.’
So Allah gave them the reward of this world and the fair reward of the Hereafter; and Allah loves the virtuous.
O you who have faith! If you obey the faithless, they will turn you back on your heels, and you will become losers.
Indeed, Allah is your Master, and He is the best of helpers.
We shall cast terror into the hearts of the faithless because of their ascribing partners to Allah, for which He has not sent down any authority, and their refuge shall be the Fire, and evil is the [final] abode of the wrongdoers.
Allah certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were slaying them with His leave, until you lost courage, disputed about the matter, and disobeyed after He showed you what you loved. Some among you desire this world, and some among you desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you away from them so that He might test you. Certainly He has excused you, for Allah is gracious to the faithful.
When you were fleeing without paying any attention to anyone, while the Apostle was calling you from your rear, He requited you with grief upon grief, so that you may not grieve for what you lose nor for what befalls you, and Allah is well aware of what you do.
Then He sent down to you safety after grief—a drowsiness that came over a group of you—while another group, anxious only about themselves, entertained false notions about Allah, notions of [pagan] ignorance. They say, ‘Do we have any role in the matter?’ Say, ‘Indeed the matter belongs totally to Allah.’ They hide in their hearts what they do not disclose to you. They say, ‘Had we any role in the matter, we would not have been slain here.’ Say, ‘Even if you had remained in your houses, those destined to be slain would have set out toward the places where they were laid to rest, so that Allah may test what is in your breasts, and that He may purge what is in your hearts, and Allah knows well what is in the breasts.’
Those of you who fled on the day when the two hosts met, only Satan had made them stumble because of some of their deeds. Certainly, Allah has excused them, for Allah is all-forgiving, all-forbearing.
O you who have faith! Do not be like the faithless who say of their brethren, when they travel in the land or go into battle, ‘Had they stayed with us they would not have died or been killed,’ so that Allah may make it a regret in their hearts. But Allah gives life and brings death, and Allah watches what you do.
If you are slain in the way of Allah, or die, forgiveness and mercy from Allah are surely better than what they amass.
If you die or are slain, you will surely be mustered toward Allah.
It is by Allah’s mercy that you are gentle to them; had you been harsh and hardhearted, they would have surely scattered from around you. So excuse them and plead for forgiveness for them, and consult them in the affairs, and once you are resolved, put your trust in Allah. Indeed Allah loves those who trust in Him.
If Allah helps you, no one can overcome you, but if He forsakes you, who will help you after Him? So in Allah let all the faithful put their trust.

Sources present: Ṭabarsī, Majmaʿ al-Bayān [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan]; Ṭūsī, al-Tibyān [tusi_al_tibyan]; Baḥrānī, al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan]; al-Qummī, Tafsīr al-Qummī [qummi]; An Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary]. — Ṭabāṭabāʾī's al-Mīzān is SILENT for this passage: its volume for Āl ʿImrān 121–200 is not on al-islam.org (404) and almizan.org is an unscrapable JS app, so al-Mīzān was not retrieved (marked is_silent, not invented).
The passage draws the lessons of Uḥud: the Prophet's mortality and the duty to stand firm (v.144), death only at its appointed term (v.145), the devoted men of past prophets who never weakened (vv.146–148), the warning against obeying the disbelievers (vv.149–151), God's fulfilled promise undone by disobedience and the divine pardon and slumber that sifted the believers (vv.152–155), the contrast with the death-fearing disbelievers and the worth of martyrdom (vv.156–158), and the Prophet's gentleness and consultation (vv.159–160).
1. "Muhammad is only a messenger" (v.144). All read the Uḥud death-rumour occasion and the verse as a charge to stand firm whether the Prophet lives or dies; all gloss "turn back on your heels" as apostasy and "the thankful" as the steadfast. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [tusi_al_tibyan] [bahrani_al_burhan] [qummi]
2. Death at its term; the devoted men (vv.145–148). All read "no soul dies but by God's leave" as consolation and incitement to jihād, and the ribbiyyūn (great throngs, ten-thousand each) who never weakened despite their prophets' slaying. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [tusi_al_tibyan] [qummi]
3. The rout, the pardon and the slumber (vv.152–155). All four Arabic sources read the same Uḥud sequence — victory turned by the archers' disobedience (the world-seekers vs. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jubayr's Hereafter-seekers), the divine pardon, and the slumber (nuʿās) sent to distinguish the sincere believers from the anxious hypocrites — al-Qummī and al-Burhān linking it to the sifting of al ʿImrān 179. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [bahrani_al_burhan] [qummi]
4. Gentleness and consultation (vv.159–160). All read God's praise of the Prophet's gentleness and the command to pardon, seek forgiveness, and consult. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [tusi_al_tibyan] [bahrani_al_burhan] [qummi]
1. "Turning back on the heels" = the apostasy over the succession (v.144) — a major Imāmī reading. al-Qummī and al-Burhān carry the weighty doctrine: al-Bāqir — "the people were [people of] apostasy after the Prophet except three (al-Miqdād, Abū Dharr, Salmān)" — read against this verse, with ʿAlī as "the thankful," and al-Bāqir's refutation that Abū Bakr's pledge was "God's pleasure." [bahrani_al_burhan] [qummi] al-Burhān also carries the report that the Prophet was poisoned ("if he died or were killed"). [bahrani_al_burhan] The philologists read the verse as the general warning against ridda. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [tusi_al_tibyan]
2. "God's path" = the wilāya of ʿAlī; the rajʿa (v.157). al-Burhān (al-Bāqir, to Jābir and Zurāra): "God's path is ʿAlī and his offspring; whoever is killed in his wilāya is killed in God's path" — tied to the rajʿa ("death and killing are distinct; every believer has both — the killed is raised to die, the dead raised to be killed"). [bahrani_al_burhan] Absent from the philologists, who read "God's path" in the general sense.
3. The named fleers (v.155). al-Qummī and al-Burhān name the men "whom Satan made slip" (ʿUqba b. ʿUthmān and others, "the people of the ʿAqaba"). [bahrani_al_burhan] [qummi]
4. ʿAlī's heroism and "the thankful one" (vv.144–146). Ṭabarsī and al-Burhān carry the report of ʿAlī's many wounds at Uḥud and God's "thanking" him in two verses; al-Burhān adds ʿAlī's lifetime declaration "who has more right to him than I?" [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [bahrani_al_burhan]
The Uḥud lessons — the Prophet's mortality and the call to constancy, death only at its term, the alternation of fortune as a test, the rout caused by disobedience and the mercy and slumber that followed, and the Prophet's tender, consultative leadership — are common ground for all the present sources. The distinctive Imāmī material, carried by al-Qummī and al-Burhān, is here unusually doctrinally loaded: v.144's "turning back on the heels" is read as the community's apostasy over the succession ("all but three"), with ʿAlī as the verse's "thankful one"; and v.157's "God's path" is read as martyrdom in ʿAlī's wilāya, bound to the rajʿa. These are contested, confessionally weighty readings, rendered here faithfully as what the sources report, not endorsed; a reviewer should weigh them against the philological tafsīrs (Ṭūsī, Ṭabarsī), which handle the qirāʾāt (qutila/qātala), the one-term-or-two question, and the battle-occasions, and draw the Imāmī points (ʿAlī's heroism, the thankful one) more soberly. The Enlightening Commentary gives the didactic battle-frame; al-Mīzān is absent by retrieval failure, and a specialist should consult Ṭabāṭabāʾī's vv.144–160 in a print edition. al-Burhān's large succession- and rajʿa-narration sets were rendered representatively.
