It is Allah who has sent down the Book with the truth and [He has sent down] the Balance. What do you know—maybe the Hour is near
Those who do not believe in it ask [you] to hasten it, but those who have faith are apprehensive of it, and know that it is true. Indeed those who are in doubt about the Hour are in extreme error
Allah is all-attentive to His servants. He provides for whomever He wishes, and He is the All-strong, the All-mighty
Whoever desires the tillage of the Hereafter, We will enhance for him his tillage, and whoever desires the tillage of the world, We will give it to him, but he will have no share in the Hereafter
Do they have deities [besides Allah] who have ordained for them a religion not permitted by Allah? Were it not for a [prior] conclusive word, judgement would have been made between them, and indeed a painful punishment awaits the wrongdoers
When it is about to befall them, You will see the wrongdoers fearful because of what they have earned; but those who have faith and do righteous deeds will be in the gardens of paradise: they will have whatever they wish near their Lord. That is the mighty grace
Such is the good news that Allah gives to His servants who have faith and do righteous deeds! Say, ‘I do not ask you any reward for it except the love of [my] relatives.’ Whoever performs a good deed, We shall enhance its goodness for him. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-appreciative
Do they say, ‘He has fabricated a lie against Allah’? If so, should Allah wish He would set a seal on your heart, and Allah will efface the falsehood and confirm the truth with His words. Indeed He knows well what is in the breasts
It is He who accepts the repentance of His servants, and excuses their misdeeds and knows what you do
He answers [the supplications of] those who have faith and do righteous deeds and enhances them out of His grace. But as for the faithless, there is a severe punishment for them
English translation: Ali Quli Qarai
This passage moves from the descent of "the Book with the truth and the Balance" (v.17) through the nearness and dread of the Hour (vv.17–18), God's luṭf and apportioned provision (v.19), the two "tillages" of this world and the next (v.20), the rebuke of self-appointed legislators (v.21), and the contrast of the fearful wrongdoers with the believers in "the meadows of the Gardens" (v.22) — to the sūra's spiritual climax: "Say: I ask of you no reward for it except love for the kinsfolk (al-mawadda fī l-qurbā)" (v.23), followed by the answer to the charge of fabrication (v.24) and God's acceptance of repentance and response to the faithful (vv.25–26).
The Balance (v.17). al-Mīzān reads al-mīzān as the religion itself — the standard by which beliefs and deeds are weighed and requited — anchoring this in 57:25 and setting aside the readings "justice," "the physical scale," and "the Prophet." al-Ṭabarsī and al-Ṭūsī favour al-ʿadl (justice) — "the balance is the instrument of fairness" — al-Ṭūsī adding an anti-Predestinarian point from "with the truth." al-Qummī alone reads it as taʾwīl: "the Balance is Amīr al-Muʾminīn," citing 55:7 ("He set up the Balance" = the Imam) — rendered strictly as attributed.
The mawadda verse (v.23) is where the sources most fully converge. Remarkably, here the convergence crosses the Sunnī–Shīʿī line. al-Ṭabarsī lays out three readings — love-in-God (al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī), love of the Prophet for his Qurashī kinship (Ibn ʿAbbās), and love of his ʿitra/Ahl al-Bayt — and favours the third, citing the Prophet's own answer "ʿAlī, Fāṭima, and their two sons," Abū Umāma's "one tree" ḥadīth, and ʿAlī's "in the Family of Ḥā-Mīm is a verse." al-Ṭūsī reports the same three and states plainly: "the first is the choice with us, and upon it are our companions" — the kin. al-Qummī and al-Burhān give the Imāmī reading in full: it was "revealed concerning us specifically — the Companions of the Cloak"; al-Burhān heaps some thirty narrations, including al-Riḍā's enumeration of the verse among the twelve "verses of being chosen," the seven who fulfilled the love (Salmān, Abū Dharr, ʿAmmār, al-Miqdād, Jābir, Thubayt, Zayd b. Arqam) — and, strikingly, the Sunnī chains (Aḥmad's Musnad, al-Bukhārī, Muslim via Ibn ʿAbbās; al-Thaʿlabī; Umm Salama's ḥadīth of the Cloak). al-Mīzān supplies the decisive analysis: he tests and rejects five readings, then endorses the Ahl al-Bayt reading — not as bare taʾwīl but by argument, grounding it in the mutawātir Ḥadīth al-Thaqalayn and al-Safīna and resolving the "reward" objection by showing that love of the ʿitra is itself a referral to their scholarly authority, hence part of the call, not a price beyond it.
Other notes. On v.20 al-Burhān (via Abū Baṣīr) reads the "two tillages" as knowledge of the Imams vs. this world, beside al-Qummī's and its own plainer gloss ("wealth and sons are this world's tillage, the righteous deed the Hereafter's"). On v.21 al-Qummī and al-Burhān read "the decisive word" as the Imam/Imāma, al-Burhān adding al-Bāqir's "the Qāʾim would have left none of them." On v.24's "He effaces falsehood and confirms the truth by His words," al-Qummī glosses "His words" as the Prophet, the Imams, and the Qāʾim, while al-Ṭabarsī, al-Ṭūsī and al-Mīzān read it as the inimitable revelation that clears the Prophet of the fabrication charge.
Convergence: all six sources treat v.23 as singling out the Prophet's household for an enjoined love — a rare point where the classical Sunnī attestation (carried within these Imāmī works and by al-Mīzān) and the Shīʿī reading meet. Divergence: the register — al-Ṭabarsī, al-Ṭūsī and al-Mīzān argue the verse philologically and theologically (and over the Balance and the Hour) while al-Qummī and al-Burhān read the Balance, the Word, and the "good deed" through walāya — each layer preserved as its source gives it.
