O you who have faith! Obey Allah and His Apostle, and do not turn away from him while you hear [him].
Do not be like those who say, ‘We hear,’ though they do not hear.
Indeed the worst of beasts in Allah’s sight are the deaf and dumb who do not exercise their reason.
Had Allah known any good in them, He would have surely made them hear, and were He to make them hear, surely they would turn away, being disregardful.
O you who have faith! Answer Allah and the Apostle when he summons you to that which will give you life. Know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that toward Him you will be mustered.
And beware of a punishment, which shall not visit the wrongdoers among you exclusively, and know that Allah is severe in retribution.
Remember when you were few, abased in the land, and feared lest the people should despoil you, and He gave you refuge, and strengthened you with His help, and provided you with all the good things so that you may give thanks.
O you who have faith! Do not betray Allah and the Apostle, and do not betray your trusts knowingly.
Know that your possessions and children are only a test, and that Allah—with Him is a great reward.
O you who have faith! If you are wary of Allah, He shall appoint a criterion for you, and absolve you of your misdeeds, and forgive you, for Allah is dispenser of a great grace.
When the faithless plotted against you to take you captive, or to kill or expel you—they plotted and Allah devised, and Allah is the best of devisers.
When Our signs are recited to them, they say, ‘We have heard already. If we want, we [too] can say like this. These are nothing but myths of the ancients.’
And when they said, ‘O Allah, if this be the truth from You, rain down upon us stones from the sky, or bring us a painful punishment.’
But Allah will not punish them while you are in their midst, nor will Allah punish them while they plead for forgiveness.
What [excuse] have they that Allah should not punish them, when they bar [the faithful] from the Holy Mosque, and they are not its custodians? Its custodians are only the Godwary, but most of them do not know.
Their prayer at the House is nothing but whistling and clapping. So taste the punishment because of what you used to defy.
Indeed the faithless spend their wealth to bar from the way of Allah. Soon they will have spent it, then it will be a cause of regret to them, then they will be overcome, and the faithless will be gathered toward Hell,
so that Allah may separate the bad ones from the good, and place the bad on one another, and pile them up together, and cast them into hell. It is they who are the losers.

Sources present (all six non-silent): Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan]; Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan]; Baḥrānī, al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan]; al-Qummī [qummi]; Ṭabāṭabāʾī, al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan]; An Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary]. The Arabic sources were fetched and translated here; al-Mīzān is rendered from its verified Arabic. al-Qummī is explicitly silent on several ayāt (20–23, 25–26), commenting from v.24 onward; this is noted, not filled. Full Arabic in each original_ar.
What the passage says. After the Badr narrative, the sūra turns to command: obey God and His Messenger and truly hear (20–21); the worst of creatures are those who will not reason (22–23); respond to the One who calls you "to what gives you life," for God comes between a man and his heart (24); fear a trial that spares no one, recall your former weakness, and do not betray your trusts (25–28); the godwary are given a furqān, a criterion (29); then a sweep over the Meccan plot to kill the Prophet, the deniers' scorn and their challenge to be stoned from heaven, their barring of the Sacred Mosque, and the wealth they spend — to their own ruin — against God's way (30–37).
The call to life and the heart. On 24 the sources divide along their genres. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and [tusi_al_tibyan] give the classical spread — jihād and martyrdom, faith, knowledge, Paradise — as "what gives you life." [qummi] and [bahrani_al_burhan] carry the distinctive Imāmī reading that the life summoned to is the walāya of ʿAlī; al-Burhān notably reinforces it with converging chains, including one transmitted by a Sunnī collector (Ibn Mardawayh) raised to al-Bāqir. All read "God comes between a man and his heart" as a summons to seize obedience before death or hardening intervenes; al-Qummī and al-Burhān gloss it morally (God interposing between the believer and ruinous sin), sealing it with "deeds are by their endings." [tabatabai_al_mizan] frames 15–28 as one continuous war-ethic exhortation.
Trust, trial, and the criterion. For 27–28 the four Imāmī sources converge on Abū Lubāba's betrayal and tawba at Banū Qurayẓa; [qummi] draws from it the pointed thesis that the verse, though placed among the Badr material, "descended in year 5," "a proof that the compilation differs from the order of revelation." On the furqān (29) [qummi] and [bahrani_al_burhan] define it tersely as "the knowledge by which you distinguish truth from falsehood," while [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and [tabatabai_al_mizan] add the senses of a way-out and victory, the Enlightening Commentary and al-Mīzān stressing the inner light of discernment.
The plot and the deniers. All sources set 30 against the Dār al-Nadwa council and laylat al-mabīt (ʿAlī on the Prophet's bed); [tabatabai_al_mizan] supplies al-Rāghib's analysis that God's makr is praiseworthy requital, and reads the three options (confine/kill/expel) as evidence of their shūrā. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and [qummi] name al-Naḍr b. al-Ḥārith — executed after Badr — as the sneerer of "myths of the ancients" (31). On the challenge "rain stones upon us" (32) the plain reading (Quraysh's defiance) stands in [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan], [qummi] and [tabatabai_al_mizan], while [bahrani_al_burhan] preserves a striking second occasion in which al-Ḥārith al-Fihrī's objection to ʿAlī's designation prompts the verse. On 34–35 the Imāmī sources agree (with al-Bāqir and al-Ṣādiq) that the Sanctuary's true guardians are "only the godfearing," and that the polytheists' worship there was "whistling and clapping." Finally (36–37), [qummi], [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and the Enlightening Commentary read the self-wasting expenditure as Quraysh's funding of Badr and its sequels — money that "becomes a regret," ending in defeat and the heaping of the foul into Hell.
