The verses

  1. 27

Relate to them truly the account of Adam’s two sons. When the two of them offered an offering, it was accepted from one of them and not accepted from the other. [One of them] said, ‘Surely I will kill you.’ [The other one] said, ‘Allah accepts only from the Godwary.

  2. 28

Even if you extend your hand toward me to kill me, I will not extend my hand toward you to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.

  3. 29

I desire that you earn [the burden of] my sin and your sin, to become one of the inmates of the Fire, and such is the requital of the wrongdoers.’

  4. 30

So his soul prompted him to kill his brother, and he killed him, and thus became one of the losers.

  5. 31

Then Allah sent a crow, exploring in the ground, to show him how to bury the corpse of his brother. He said, ‘Woe to me! Am I unable to be [even] like this crow and bury my brother’s corpse?’ Thus he became regretful.

  6. 32

That is why We decreed for the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul, without [its being guilty of] manslaughter or corruption on the earth, is as though he had killed all mankind, and whoever saves a life is as though he had saved all mankind. Our apostles certainly brought them manifest signs, yet even after that, many of them commit excesses on the earth.

  7. 33

Indeed the requital of those who wage war against Allah and His Apostle, and try to cause corruption on the earth, is that they shall be slain or crucified, or shall have their hands and feet cut off from opposite sides, or be banished from the land. That is a disgrace for them in this world, and in the Hereafter, there is a great punishment for them,

  8. 34

excepting those who repent before you capture them, and know that Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.

  9. 35

O you who have faith! Be wary of Allah, and seek the means of recourse to Him, and wage jihad in His way, so that you may be felicitous.

  10. 36

Indeed if the faithless possessed all that is on the earth, and as much of it besides, to redeem themselves with it from the punishment of the Day of Resurrection, it shall not be accepted from them, and there is a painful punishment for them.

  11. 37

They would long to leave the Fire, but they shall never leave it, and there is a lasting punishment for them.

  12. 38

As for the thief, man or woman, cut off their hands as a requital for what they have earned. [That is] an exemplary punishment from Allah, and Allah is all-mighty, all-wise.

  13. 39

But whoever repents after his wrongdoing, and reforms, then Allah shall accept his repentance. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.

  14. 40

Do you not know that to Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth? He punishes whomever He wishes, and forgives whomever He wishes, and Allah has power over all things.

  15. 41

O Apostle! Do not grieve for those who are active in [promoting] unfaith, such as those who say, ‘We believe’ with their mouths, but whose hearts have no faith, and the Jews who eavesdrop with the aim of [telling] lies [against you] and eavesdrop for other people who do not come to you. They pervert words from their meanings, [and] say, ‘If you are given this, take it, but if you are not given this, beware!’ Yet whomever Allah wishes to mislead, you cannot avail him anything against Allah. They are the ones whose hearts Allah did not desire to purify. For them is disgrace in this world, and there is a great punishment for them in the Hereafter.

  16. 42

Eavesdroppers with the aim of [telling] lies, eaters of the unlawful—if they come to you, judge between them, or disregard them. If you disregard them, they will not harm you in any way. But if you judge, judge between them with justice. Indeed Allah loves the just.

  17. 43

And how should they make you a judge, while with them is the Torah, in which is Allah’s judgement? Yet in spite of that, they turn their backs [on Him] and they are not believers.

✦ Synthesisopus-4.8every claim cited to a source below

Synthesis: Sūrat al-Māʾida 5:27–43 (Six-Source Tafsīr Triangulation)

Sources present: Ṭabarsī, Majmaʿ al-Bayān [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan]; Ṭūsī, al-Tibyān [tusi_al_tibyan]; Baḥrānī, al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan]; al-Qummī [qummi]; Ṭabāṭabāʾī, al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan]; An Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary]. All six present.

The passage recites the story of Adam's two sons (27–31), derives from it the sanctity of human life (32), legislates the ḥadd for waging war and banditry (33–34), calls to God-wariness and "the means" (35), warns the disbelievers (36–37), prescribes the ḥadd for theft (38–40), and consoles the Prophet against those who rush to disbelief and pervert judgment (41–43).

Convergence

1. Adam's two sons (27–31). All read envy over the accepted and rejected offerings as driving the murder, with "God accepts only from the God-fearing" the key. [enlightening_commentary] and [tabatabai_al_mizan] draw the lesson — piety, not the gift, is the criterion; Abel's refusal to strike first is virtue, not weakness; the People of the Book's envious rejection of the Prophet mirrors Cain. [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] give the narrative from al-Bāqir and al-Sajjād: the fat ram against the poor crop, Iblīs teaching Cain to crush Abel's head, the crow teaching burial, Adam's forty-day mourning and the gift of Seth. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and [tusi_al_tibyan] add the legend of the twin sisters.

2. The sanctity of life (32). All expound "whoever kills one soul… as if all mankind." [tusi_al_tibyan] gives six interpretations; [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] preserve al-Bāqir and al-Ṣādiq — a place in Hell to which the killer of all would come, and "bringing a soul from misguidance to guidance is to give it life, from guidance to misguidance is to kill it"; [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and [tusi_al_tibyan] cite Ibn ʿAbbās that aiding or slaying a prophet or just imam is as saving or slaying all. [tabatabai_al_mizan] ties the verse back to the warning against envy.

3. Waging war and banditry (33–34). [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan], [tusi_al_tibyan], [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] converge on the Imāmī graduated penalty (al-Bāqir via ʿAlī b. Ḥassān): killing with robbery → death and crucifixion; killing → death; robbery → opposite hand and foot; mere terror → banishment — the muḥārib being anyone who bares a weapon, in town or country — and read "except those who repent before you overpower them" as repentance before the Imam seizes them.

4. The means, the disbelievers, theft (35–40). All read "seek the means (wasīla)" as nearness by obedience; [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] specify "through the Imam," with ʿAlī's "I am his means" and the ḥadīth al-wasīla on the Prophet's rank. On theft, [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and [tusi_al_tibyan] fix the niṣāb at a quarter dīnār; [bahrani_al_burhan] preserves ʿAlī's leaving the thumb and palm so the repentant may perform ablution; [bahrani_al_burhan] applies "they will not leave the Fire" to the enemies of ʿAlī.

5. Perverting judgment (41–43). All read these verses as consolation to the Prophet against those who "rush to disbelief" and "listen to lies." [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and [tusi_al_tibyan] give the Khaybar adultery and the Torah's stoning law (Ibn Ṣūriyā); [qummi] and [bahrani_al_burhan] give the Banū al-Naḍīr/Qurayẓa blood-money dispute and ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy's scheme. All gloss suḥt as unlawful gain — above all bribery in judgment (al-Ṣādiq: "that is unbelief") — and note the Prophet's option to judge or turn away, and the rebuke that they seek his judgment while the Torah, "in which is God's ruling," is with them.

Distinctive contributions

[enlightening_commentary] and [tabatabai_al_mizan] supply the moral-psychological reading (envy, piety, the sanctity of life), while the four Arabic sources supply the legal detail of ḥirāba, theft and judicial integrity, and [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] the narrations and the walāya readings of "the means" and "they will not leave the Fire." No source is silent for this passage.
