The verses

  1. 28

O Prophet! Say to your wives, ‘If you desire the life of the world and its glitter, come, I will provide for you and release you in a graceful manner.

  2. 29

But if you desire Allah and His Apostle and the abode of the Hereafter, then Allah has indeed prepared a great reward for the virtuous among you.’

  3. 30

O wives of the Prophet! Whoever of you commits a gross indecency, her punishment shall be doubled, and that is easy for Allah.

  4. 31

But whoever of you is obedient to Allah and His Apostle and acts righteously, We shall give her a twofold reward, and We will have in store for her a noble provision.

  5. 32

O wives of the Prophet! You are not like other women: if you are wary [of Allah], do not be complaisant in your speech, lest he in whose heart is a sickness should aspire; speak honourable words.

  6. 33

Stay in your houses and do not flaunt your finery like the former [days of pagan] ignorance. Maintain the prayer and pay the zakat, and obey Allah and His Apostle. Indeed Allah desires to repel all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and purify you with a thorough purification.

  7. 34

And remember what is recited in your homes of the signs of Allah and wisdom. Indeed Allah is all-attentive, all-aware.

Synthesis: Sūrat al-Aḥzāb 28–34

Triangulating Ṭabarsī (Majmaʿ al-Bayān) [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan], al-Qummī (Tafsīr al-Qummī) [qummi], al-Ṭūsī (al-Tibyān) [tusi_al_tibyan], al-Baḥrānī (al-Burhān) [bahrani_al_burhan], and al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī (al-Mīzān) [tabatabai_al_mizan] — five Imāmī tafsīrs, all non-silent for this passage.

Human-review flags: al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan] and al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan] are flagged needs_human_review. Both carry very long narration runs on 33:33 (al-Mīzān's baḥth riwāʾī of ~38 parallel Ḥadīth al-Kisāʾ reports; al-Burhān's 62-narration dossier including long ʿAlī–Abū Bakr and al-Ḥasan–Muʿāwiya orations). The recurring matn and the longest sermons were faithfully condensed in text_en, with every isnād head and the distinctive content preserved; original_ar is verbatim.

What the passage says. 33:28–29 is the takhyīr: the Prophet is bidden to offer his wives a choice between "the life of this world and its adornment" (with an honourable release) and "God, His Messenger, and the abode of the Hereafter" (with "a great reward for the doers of good among you"). 33:30–32 makes the wives a category apart — lastunna ka-aḥadin mina l-nisāʾ, "you are not like any of the women" — doubling both reward and punishment, and enjoining guarded speech (fa-lā takhḍaʿna bi-l-qawl). 33:33 commands settling in the houses, the prayer, the alms, and obedience, then turns to the Verse of Purification: innamā yurīdu llāhu li-yudhhiba ʿankumu l-rijsa ahla l-bayti wa-yuṭahhirakum taṭhīran. 33:34 returns to the wives: remember what is recited in the houses of God's signs and al-ḥikma.

Sabab al-nuzūl of the takhyīr. The sources give two strands, sometimes blended. al-Qummī [qummi], echoed verbatim by al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan] (8576/[9]) and quoted in al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan], roots it in the wives' demand for a share of the Khaybar treasure and their retort that the Prophet would not find them equals (akfāʾ) if he divorced them; he withdrew in the chamber of Umm Ibrāhīm for twenty-nine days. Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and al-Mīzān instead relay al-Wāḥidī's Ibn-ʿAbbās report of the Ḥafṣa quarrel and ʿUmar striking her. al-Burhān's Kāfī-chains (8569–8575) name Zaynab and Ḥafṣa and fix Umm Salama (or, "by Sunnī routes," ʿĀʾisha — a divergence al-Mīzān notes) as first to choose God and His Messenger. On the legal force of the choice, Ṭabarsī and Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan] catalogue four madhhab positions (Abū Ḥanīfa, Mālik, al-Shāfiʿī, and the Imāmī view that it was peculiar to the Prophet — no divorce results); al-Mīzān concurs that the rulings are Prophet-specific.

Qirāʾāt and grammar. Ṭabarsī and Ṭūsī both preserve the variant-reading discussion of 33:30–31 (yuḍāʿaf / nuḍāʿif / yuḍaʿʿaf; yaqnut with yāʾ vs taʿmal with tāʾ by sense vs wording) and of qarna / qirna (33:33), with the iʿrāb of ahla l-bayti (accusative on praise, or vocative). Ṭabarsī adds that innamā is limiting (muḥaqqiqa li-mā baʿdahā, nāfiya li-mā lam yathbut).

33:33 — the Taṭhīr verse, reported as-attributed. All five sources read the Ahl al-Bayt of this verse as the People of the Cloak (Aṣḥāb al-Kisāʾ): Muḥammad, ʿAlī, Fāṭima, al-Ḥasan, al-Ḥusayn. The decisive argument they advance is the grammatical-gender shift: the wife-verses use feminine plurals (buyūtikunna, tabarrajna, lastunna, waʾdhkurna), but 33:33b switches to masculine plural (ʿankum, yuṭahhirakum). al-Qummī [qummi] and al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan] (8611/[29]) carry this in the words of Zayd b. ʿAlī ("had He meant the wives He would have said ʿankunna … yuṭahhirakunna"); Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan] and al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan] build it into a sustained ʿiṣma argument — that innamā + the masculine address confines an effected (creative, not merely legislative) will of purification to a defined group, entailing their infallibility, which excludes the wives. al-Qummī and al-Burhān gloss al-rijs as al-shakk (doubt); al-Mīzān reads it as the inward filth of false belief, hence ʿiṣma. al-Burhān (8583/[3], 8584/[2]) additionally relays the Imāmī wilāya gloss (the Ahl al-Bayt = the Imāms and their authority). Where the wives are included, the sources report it as the minority view of ʿIkrima/ʿUrwa and rebut it; al-Mīzān uniquely canvasses every candidate sense of "Ahl al-Bayt" before settling on the Five.

Crucially, these are Imāmī works citing both Shīʿī (khāṣṣa) and Sunnī (ʿāmma/mukhālifīn) chains. al-Burhān reproduces the Ḥadīth al-Kisāʾ from the Musnad of Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal (via Umm Salama, Wāthila b. al-Asqaʿ), Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim and Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (ʿĀʾisha's mirṭ muraḥḥal, 8622/[40], 8633/[51]), al-Thaʿlabī, and Abū Dāwūd; and the Zayd-b.-Arqam Ḥadīth al-Thaqalayn from Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (8638/[56]), where Zayd, asked if the wives are Ahl al-Bayt, distinguishes them from the ʿaṣaba forbidden charity. al-Mīzān frames the whole as 70+ traditions, the Sunnī routes outnumbering the Shīʿī, and argues the verse was revealed alone and only later placed among the wife-verses.

33:34. Ṭabarsī, Ṭūsī, and al-Mīzān read waʾdhkurna as "preserve/remember" (al-Mīzān rejecting the "give thanks" gloss); the address returns to the wives, with Muqātil's report (Asmāʾ bint ʿUmays, or Umm Salama) bridging to 33:35.
