al-Mursalat 29–40 — The march to the Fire

The deniers are now driven forward: Proceed to what you used to deny — to a shadow of three columns, no shade and no shield from the flame, a fire that hurls sparks like a castle, as if they were yellow camels (29–33). It is a Day when they do not speak and are given no leave to excuse themselves (35–36); the Day of Decision, on which they and the former peoples are gathered and challenged, if you have any stratagem, contrive against Me (38–39). The refrain punctuates each turn.

al-Tabarsi, al-Tusi and al-Tabatabaʼi read closely together. The ‘shadow’ is the smoke of Hell, forked into three columns that hem the disbeliever above and on both sides; la zalil means it wards off nothing, and lahab is the fire’s rising red-yellow-green flame. On kal-qasr they preserve the twin images — sparks like a castle in size (Ibn ʿAbbas, Mujahid) or like great tree-trunks (Qatada, al-Dahhak) — and on jimalat sufr the philological note (al-Farraʾ) that black camels always carry a yellow cast, so the Arabs call them ‘yellow’. On ‘they do not speak’ all three reconcile it with verses of dispute in the Hereafter by ʿIkrima’s principle that the Day has many stations: in some the damned speak, in another their mouths are sealed. al-Tabatabaʼi fixes the speaker of ‘contrive against Me’ as God Himself, reads the challenge as exposing that there is no power but God’s (Q 2:165–166), and notes the iltifat to the first person because the only One worth contriving against is God alone.

al-Qummi gives brief glosses (three columns of Fire; sparks like castles and mountains). al-Bahrani supplies the passage’s Imami taʾwil: reports from al-Sadiq that the thirsty on the Day are told ‘Proceed to what you denied— meaning Amir al-Muʾminin’, and that the ‘three columns’ are ‘the three’ first caliphs (by code-name). These companion-polemical readings are given only as attributed and flagged for human review. By contrast the report al-Bahrani cites on v.36 — al-Sadiq’s ‘God is too just to deny His servant an excuse he could plead; but the disbeliever is overcome and has none’ — is a mainstream theological gloss, cited independently by the Enlightening Commentary from Nur al-Thaqalayn.
