And the people of Lot denied the warnings.
We unleashed upon them a rain of stones, excepting the family of Lot, whom We delivered at dawn
as a blessing from Us. Thus do We reward those who give thanks.
He had already warned them of Our punishment, but they disputed the warnings.
They even solicited of him his guests, whereat We blotted out their eyes, [saying,] ‘Taste My punishment and My warnings!’
Early at dawn there visited them an abiding punishment:
‘Taste My punishment and warnings!’
Certainly We have made the Quran simple for the sake of admonishment. So is there anyone who will be admonished?
Certainly the warnings did come to Pharaoh’s clan
who denied all of Our signs. So We seized them with the seizing of One [who is] all-mighty, Omnipotent.
English translation: Ali Quli Qarai
The fourth and fifth histories, told briefly. Lot's people denied the warnings; a stone-gale destroyed them save the family of Lot, saved at the last of the night as a favour... thus We reward the thankful (vv.33-35). Lot had warned them of Our violent grip, but they disputed the warnings (v.36); when they solicited him for his guests, We blotted out their eyes -- taste My torment -- and a settled torment seized them at daybreak (vv.37-39); the refrain follows (v.40). Then the warners came to Pharaoh's folk, who belied all Our signs, so We seized them with the seizure of the All-Mighty, the Omnipotent (vv.41-42).
The Enlightening Commentary and the Arabic sources agree on the story-line: hasib is a stone-bearing gale; bi-sahar a pre-dawn deliverance; the guests are angels whom Gabriel blinds with his wing (the EC and al-Tabarsi narrate the wing-blow, al-Bahrani grounding it in a hadith from al-Sadiq that Gabriel 'pointed his finger and their eyes were gone'). On ni'ma min 'indina, al-Tabarsi, al-Tusi and al-Mizan parse ni'ma as an object of purpose -- deliverance as the reward of thankfulness. For Pharaoh, the sources gloss the warners as Moses and Aaron or the nine signs, and all Our signs as those nine; al-Tusi notably draws a theological inference from the refrain, reading We made the Qur'an easy for remembrance as a refutation of the Mujbira (determinists): God eased it so that all may take heed, not merely a predestined few.
Two features are worth flagging. al-Qummi is silent on this passage -- greattafsirs.com returned no Qummi commentary for vv.33-42 -- so it is marked silent, not filled from elsewhere. And al-Bahrani carries a batin (inner-meaning) reading from al-Baqir that they belied all Our signs means they belied all the legatees (awsiya') -- a walaya taʾwil recorded strictly as attributed and flagged for review, alongside 'Ali ibn Ibrahim's plain reading of vv.41-42 tying 'or do they say, We are a victorious multitude' to Quraysh's threat against the Prophet and the rout at Badr.
