Synthesis: Sūrat al-Dukhān 43–59

Triangulating Majmaʿ al-Bayān (Ṭabarsī), al-Tibyān (Ṭūsī), al-Burhān (Baḥrānī), Tafsīr al-Qummī, al-Mīzān (Ṭabāṭabāʾī), and the Enlightening Commentary.

Human-review flags: al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan] — the vv. 43–59 portion of one long bayān unit (vv. 34–59), faithfully condensed. al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan] — the long Saʿd al-Khaffāf ḥadīth of the personified, speaking Qurʾān condensed; its Shīʿī taʾwīl (the God-fearing = the Shīʿa of ʿAlī; 'we are the dhikr of God') rendered as-attributed, not endorsed.

What the passage says. The sūra's two destinies are drawn in sharp contrast. For the sinner: 'the tree of Zaqqūm' as his food, boiling in the belly 'like molten metal' (vv. 43–46), and the command to 'seize him and drag him to the midst of Hell,' to pour scalding water over his head, and to mock him — 'Taste! Indeed you are the [self-styled] mighty, the noble' (vv. 47–50). For the God-fearing: 'a secure station' amid gardens and springs, fine silk and brocade, wide-eyed houris, every fruit, and no death after 'the first death' — 'a grace from your Lord, the great success' (vv. 51–57). The sūra then closes as it opened, with the Book 'made easy' for remembrance and the command 'So watch; indeed they are watching' (vv. 58–59).

The Zaqqūm and the sinner (vv. 43–50). A remarkable convergence: all five present sources, and the Enlightening Commentary, identify 'the sinful' (al-athīm) with Abū Jahl, and the four narrational sources (Qummī, al-Burhān, and reported by Ṭabarsī and Ṭūsī) carry the same vignette — Abū Jahl eating dates-and-butter and sneering that this is the 'Zaqqūm' Muḥammad threatens (a play on natazaqqamu, 'we gulp it down'). Ṭabarsī and Ṭūsī add the philological layer: the qirāʾāt of yaghlī/taghlī and faʿtilūhu, Abū ʿAlī al-Fārisī's point that the muhl (molten copper/lead) is named only as a simile (it is the food, not the muhl, that boils in the belly), and the lexicon of ʿatl (shoving by force) and sawāʾ al-jaḥīm (the Fire's exact middle). On the taunt 'you are the mighty, the noble' (v. 49), all read it as bitter irony against Abū Jahl's worldly boast; al-Mīzān sharpens this by linking it to Q41:50 (the disbeliever's conceit that even if returned to his Lord he would find 'the best'), and Ṭabarsī/Ṭūsī note the alternative that it is said by way of the opposite ('you are the lowly, the abased').

The reward of the God-fearing (vv. 51–57). The discursive sources (Ṭabarsī, Ṭūsī, al-Mīzān, EC) converge on the imagery — maqām amīn as a station secure from every evil (Ṭabarsī: from death and accidents, or from Satan and sorrows; al-Mīzān: from any befalling evil, the security ascribed to the 'station' figuratively; the EC reads it as the rank of the heart made 'a threshold of the All-Merciful'), the sundus/istabraq (thin/thick silk) and the ḥūr ʿīn. al-Mīzān notes the apparent sense that the houris are other than the women of the world. The interpretive crux is v. 56, 'they taste no death therein except the first death': Ṭabarsī and Ṭūsī lay out the readings of illā ('after' / 'other than' / 'but'), Ṭūsī rebutting al-Jubbāʾī's attempt to make it a future statement; al-Mīzān treats it most fully, raising two difficulties — why except the first death at all, and (uniquely) why, given Q40:11's two deaths, the second (barzakh) death is not also excepted — and resolving them by reading 'the first death' as standing for every death tasted before the Garden. On 'He saves them from the Hellfire' (v. 56b), Ṭabarsī and Ṭūsī both pause to reject the Muʿtazilī inference that the professing sinner never leaves the Fire. All read 'a grace from your Lord' (v. 57) as pure unearned favor — al-Mīzān grounding it in God's absolute ownership (nothing obligates Him), the EC in the lesson that 'God owes nothing to anyone.'

The Shīʿī register (Qummī, al-Burhān). Qummī and al-Burhān frame the whole reward-passage as describing 'the God-fearing of the Shīʿa of the Commander of the Faithful.' al-Burhān anchors v. 51 in al-Ṣādiq's saying that whoever holds fast to God through taqwā fears no calamity, then carries the long Saʿd al-Khaffāf ḥadīth in which the personified Qurʾān intercedes on the Day of Resurrection for the Shīʿī who lived by it — citing v. 56 ('they do not taste death… ') for the five everlasting gifts — and closes with the striking equation, drawn from Q29:45, that 'we [the Imams] are the dhikr of God' (all rendered as-attributed, beside the plain-sense reading).

The closing (vv. 58–59). All sources read 'We made it easy in your tongue' as the Qurʾān eased in Arabic for remembrance (al-Mīzān: near to Q43:3; Qummī/al-Burhān add Ibn ʿAbbās's gloss that what is 'made easy' is the bounty of Paradise and the punishment of the Fire). On the final 'So watch; indeed they are watching' (v. 59), Ṭabarsī and Ṭūsī read it as the Prophet awaiting the fulfilment of God's promise while the deniers await their fate; al-Mīzān notes that calling them 'watchers' is itself derision, and — pointedly — dismisses as 'feeble' (sakhīf) the claim that the verse commands mere disengagement abrogated by the sword-verse. So the sūra ends where it began (vv. 9–10): the Book sent down for remembrance, and the command to watch.
