We sent down the Torah containing guidance and light. The prophets, who had submitted, judged by it for the Jews, and so did the rabbis and the scribes, as they were charged to preserve the Book of Allah and were witnesses to it. So do not fear the people, but fear Me, and do not sell My signs for a paltry gain. Those who do not judge by what Allah has sent down—it is they who are the faithless.
In it We prescribed for them: a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, and an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and retaliation for wounds. Yet whoever remits it out of charity, that shall be an atonement for him. Those who do not judge by what Allah has sent down—it is they who are the wrongdoers.
We followed them with Jesus son of Mary, to confirm that which was before him of the Torah, and We gave him the Evangel containing guidance and light, confirming what was before it of the Torah, and as guidance and advice for the Godwary.
Let the people of the Evangel judge by what Allah has sent down in it. Those who do not judge by what Allah has sent down—it is they who are the transgressors.
We have sent down to you the Book with the truth, confirming what was before it of the Book and as a guardian over it. So judge between them by what Allah has sent down, and do not follow their desires against the truth that has come to you. For each [community] among you We had appointed a code [of law] and a path, and had Allah wished He would have made you one community, but [His purposes required] that He should test you in respect to what He has given you. So take the lead in all good works. To Allah shall be the return of you all, whereat He will inform you concerning that about which you used to differ.
Judge between them by what Allah has sent down, and do not follow their desires. Beware of them lest they should beguile you from part of what Allah has sent down to you. But if they turn their backs [on you], then know that Allah desires to punish them for some of their sins, and indeed many of the people are transgressors.
Do they seek the judgement of [pagan] ignorance? But who is better than Allah in judgement for a people who have certainty?
O you who have faith! Do not take the Jews and the Christians for allies: they are allies of each other. Any of you who allies with them is indeed one of them. Indeed Allah does not guide the wrongdoing lot.
Yet you see those in whose hearts is a sickness rushing to them, saying, ‘We fear lest a turn of fortune should visit us.’ Maybe Allah will bring about a victory, or a command from Him, and then they will be regretful for what they kept secret in their hearts,
and the faithful will say, ‘Are these the ones who swore by Allah with solemn oaths that they were with you?!’ Their works have failed, and they have become losers.
O you who have faith! Should any of you desert his religion, Allah will soon bring a people whom He loves and who love Him, [who will be] humble towards the faithful, stern towards the faithless, waging jihad in the way of Allah, not fearing the blame of any blamer. That is Allah’s grace, which He grants to whomever He wishes, and Allah is all-bounteous, all-knowing.
Your guardian is only Allah, His Apostle, and the faithful who maintain the prayer and give the zakat while bowing down.
Whoever takes for his guardians Allah, His Apostle and the faithful [should know that] the confederates of Allah are indeed the victorious.

Sources present: Ṭabarsī, Majmaʿ al-Bayān [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan]; Ṭūsī, al-Tibyān [tusi_al_tibyan]; Baḥrānī, al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan]; al-Qummī [qummi]; Ṭabāṭabāʾī, al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan]; An Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary]. All six present.
The passage affirms the Torah and the Gospel as revelations of "guidance and light," makes the Qur'an the "guardian" over prior scripture, and three times warns that to judge by other than God's revelation is unbelief, wrongdoing or rebellion (44–50); it then forbids taking the unbelievers as protectors (51–53), promises a people whom God loves to replace any who apostatize (54), and declares the believers' sole guardians to be God, His Messenger and those "who give the alms while bowing" (55–56).
1. Judging by revelation (44–50). All read the Torah and Gospel as bearing "guidance and light," and the threefold refrain ("the disbelievers… the wrongdoers… the rebellious") as condemning those who set aside God's ruling. [enlightening_commentary] stresses that the prophets and scholars of every nation are bound to God's law (Islam being "the religion of all"); [tabatabai_al_mizan] gives the full reading of the Qur'an as muhaymin and of "to each a law and a way." [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and [tusi_al_tibyan] add the legal detail of retaliation (parity of killer and slain; equality of men and women up to a third of the blood-money). [bahrani_al_burhan] sharpens 5:44 — "whoever judges in two dirhams unjustly is of the kāfirūn" — and [qummi] gives the occasion among the Jewish blood-money dispute and ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy.
2. Not allying with the unbelievers (51–53). All read 5:51 as forbidding reliance on the Jews and Christians as protectors, "whoever allies with them is one of them." [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] gives the occasion of ʿUbāda b. al-Ṣāmit's renunciation against Ibn Ubayy; [qummi] names the "diseased of heart" who "fear a turn of fortune" as Ibn Ubayy and his party.
3. The people God will bring (54). All gloss "if any apostatize, God will bring a people He loves and who love Him." [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and [tusi_al_tibyan] report several identifications and favour ʿAlī and his companions who fought the oath-breakers, the unjust and the renegades; [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] refer it to the master of the affair and the companions of the Qāʾim.
4. The guardianship (55–56). On the "verse of walāya," the four Arabic sources converge on the ʿAlī-centred reading. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and [tusi_al_tibyan] argue it explicitly: walī means the one with foremost authority whose obedience is due, "only" (innamā) confines it to those named, and so it cannot mean mere mutual affection (common to all believers); the believer intended is ʿAlī, who gave his ring in charity while bowing. [bahrani_al_burhan] amasses the supporting narrations — the ring, the ḥadīth of the two weighty things, and the Ghadīr proclamation — and [qummi] gives the occasion (the beggar and "that praying man"). All read 5:56 as declaring "the party of God" the victors.
[enlightening_commentary] and [tabatabai_al_mizan] frame the section's universal principle — that all revelation summons to judgment by God's law, and that diversity of law is itself a divine test (their full treatments, including 5:51–56, are preserved in the record). The four Arabic sources carry the juristic detail of retaliation and the dense Imāmī reading of 5:54–55, with [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] supplying the walāya narrations. No source is silent for this passage.
