the Fire, to which they are exposed morning and evening. On the day when the Hour sets in, Pharaoh’s clan will enter the severest punishment
When they argue in the Fire, the oppressed will say to the oppressors, ‘We used to follow you; will you avail us against any portion of the Fire?’
The oppressors will say, ‘We are all in it [together]; Allah has judged between [His] servants.’
Those who are in the Fire will say to the keepers of hell, ‘Invoke your Lord to lighten for us [at least] a day’s punishment.’
They will say, ‘Had not your apostles brought you manifest proofs?’ They will say, ‘Yes.’ They will say, ‘Then invoke [Him] yourselves.’ But the invocations of the faithless only go awry
Indeed We shall help Our apostles and those who have faith in the life of the world and on the day when the witnesses rise up
the day when the excuses of the wrongdoers will not benefit them, the curse will lie on them, and for them will be the ills of the [ultimate] abode
Certainly We gave guidance to Moses and We gave the Children of Israel the Book as a legacy
as guidance and admonition for those who possess intellect
So be patient! Allah’s promise is indeed true. Plead [Allah] for forgiveness of your sin, and celebrate the praise of your Lord morning and evening
Indeed those who dispute the signs of Allah without any authority that may have come to them—there is [an ambition for] greatness in their breasts, which they will never attain. So seek the protection of Allah; indeed, He is the All-hearing, the All-seeing
The creation of the heavens and the earth is surely more prodigious than the creation of mankind, but most people do not know
The blind one and the seer are not equal, neither are the evildoers and those who have faith and do righteous deeds. Little is the admonition that you take
Indeed the Hour is bound to come; there is no doubt in it. But most people do not believe
Your Lord has said, ‘Call Me, and I will hear you!’ Indeed those who are disdainful of My worship will enter hell in utter humiliation
It is Allah who made the night for you, that you may rest in it, and the day to provide visibility. Indeed Allah is gracious to mankind, but most people do not give thanks
That is Allah, your Lord, the creator of all things, there is no god except Him. Then where do you stray
Those who were used to impugning the signs of Allah are thus made to go astray

Triangulated across five sources, all present: Ṭabarsī, Majmaʿ al-Bayān [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan]; al-Qummī, Tafsīr al-Qummī [qummi]; al-Ṭūsī, al-Tibyān [tusi_al_tibyan]; al-Baḥrānī, al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan]; al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī, al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan]; plus the Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary].
Human-review flags: al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan] is three coarse bayān units (covering 21–54, 55–60, 61–68). The 21–54 and 61–68 units overrun this passage; the commentary on vv. 21–45 and 64–68 was faithfully condensed (no content added) and so marked in-text. Flagged
needs_human_review: true.
What the passage says. Closing the Pharaoh narrative, it turns to tawḥīd: his people are "exposed to the Fire morning and evening," then admitted to "the severest punishment" at the Hour (46); the damned dispute, the weak begging the arrogant for relief and refused (47–48); the keepers rebuff the plea to "lighten a day of the punishment" (49–50); God pledges to help His messengers "on the Day the witnesses arise" (51–54); the Prophet must be patient, seek forgiveness, and glorify God (55); disputers harbor only unattainable "pride" (56); creation of the heavens and earth dwarfs that of man (57); blind and seeing are unequal (58); the Hour will come (59); "Call upon Me, I will answer you" (60); night, day, and creation prove the one Creator (61–63).
40:46 — the barzakh proof-text. All four classical sources read the morning-and-evening exposure as punishment before the Resurrection. Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] glosses it "exposed to the Fire in their graves," cites the Bukhārī–Muslim ḥadīth (Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar) on the dead person's seat shown morning and evening, then al-Ṣādiq's argument that the Hereafter's Fire has no "morning and evening," so this is "in the barzakh." Al-Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan] states the verse proves "the punishment of the grave," reports al-Suddī's view that souls are "in the bellies of black birds," and records the dissenting taqdīm/taʾkhīr reading (al-Farrāʾ via al-Balkhī) by which "morning and evening" is the renewal of burnt skins. Qummī [qummi] carries the same Ṣādiq dialogue. Al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī [tabatabai_al_mizan] argues most systematically: the verse is "explicit" that ʿarḍ precedes idkhāl; the exposure is barzakh punishment "between death and the raising"; and — distinctively — that barzakh and Hereafter punish "by one and the same thing, the Fire of the Hereafter," barzakh-dwellers experiencing it "from afar," the Hereafter's people "by entering."
A distinctive al-Burhān narration. Beyond the shared Ṣādiq and Ibn ʿUmar reports, al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan] adds an Isrāʾ ḥadīth (Hishām b. Sālim) placing usury-devourers "upon the road of the people of Pharaoh," and a singular gloss (Ibn Bābawayh via al-Daylamī) distinguishing "the Āl" (Muḥammad's progeny) from "the Ahl" (the Imams), then reporting al-Ṣādiq on "Āl Firʿawn": "by God, He meant only his daughter." This last taʾwīl is carried only here, rendered as-attributed and not endorsed.
40:47–50. Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and al-Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan] agree the disputants are chiefs and followers, the latter seeking "a portion of the Fire" lifted because a leader owes protection, the plea being desperation, not hope, since the damned "know necessarily" it is not lightened. Al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī [tabatabai_al_mizan] argues from the pronoun-shift that the disputers are Pharaoh's people specifically; on "the call of the disbelievers is only in vain" he carefully denies answer only for "what they disbelieve in," not absolutely, since other verses affirm God answers even disbelievers "in necessity." Al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan] supplies a long Ibn Ṭāwūs narration (from Zuhd al-Nabī) of the forty-year intervals before each rebuff.
40:51 — the rajʿa reading. Here Shīʿī and grammatical material diverge. Qummī [qummi] reads "We help Our messengers… in this world" as fulfilled "in the Return (al-rajʿa)" (Jamīl from al-Ṣādiq): many prophets and Imams were killed unavenged, so the help comes in the rajʿa; "the witnesses" are "the Imams." Al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan] multiplies this with parallel chains and the al-Ḥusayn material — he "was killed and has not been helped yet," and the al-Nāziʿāt gloss naming him al-rājifa. By contrast Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and al-Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan] read the help generically (proof, victory, deliverance, or retribution — citing Yaḥyā b. Zakariyyā), and al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī [tabatabai_al_mizan] calls it "a generic promise, not individual." The Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary] follows the generic line.
40:55 — prophetic ʿiṣma. On "seek forgiveness for your sin," all defend infallibility. Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] gives the ṣaghāʾir view and the sounder one — a devotional act to raise the Prophet's rank "and become a sunna." Al-Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan] allows the address may target the community. Al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī [tabatabai_al_mizan] reads dhanb "non-literally," deferring to Sūrat al-Fatḥ, and notes the view that it is "the sin of his community."
40:60 — duʿāʾ as ʿibāda. All converge that supplication is worship. Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] cites "Supplication is worship" and Ṣādiq/Bāqir reports ranking it above extra prayer. Al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan] is richest, with nine narrations (Kāfī, Tahdhīb, al-Ikhtiṣāṣ) including the emphatic "by God, it is worship… the most strenuous." Qummī [qummi] and al-Burhān both carry the Resurrection narration of God reminding the believer of every answered prayer. Al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī [tabatabai_al_mizan] notes God "substituted 'worship' for 'supplication,'" citing al-Ṣaḥīfa al-Sajjādiyya. All record Ibn ʿAbbās's minority gloss (duʿāʾ = tawḥīd), ranked below the literal sense.
40:56–57. Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and al-Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan] record the Abū al-ʿĀliya occasion (the verse concerns the Jews' Antichrist expectation). Al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī [tabatabai_al_mizan] explicitly rejects it, arguing the sūra's unified anti-disputation theme refuses a narrow sabab and the Antichrist reports do not fit, so holding these verses Medinan is untenable.
