The verses

  1. 49

When the hypocrites said, and [also] those in whose hearts is a sickness, ‘Their religion has deceived them.’ But whoever puts his trust in Allah, then Allah is indeed all-mighty, all-wise.

  2. 50

Were you to see when the angels take away the faithless, striking their faces and their backs, [saying], ‘Taste the punishment of the burning.

  3. 51

That is because of what your hands have sent ahead, and because Allah is not tyrannical to the servants.’

  4. 52

Like the precedent of Pharaoh’s clan and those who were before them, who defied Allah’s signs, so Allah seized them for their sins. Indeed Allah is all-strong, severe in retribution.

  5. 53

That is because Allah never changes a blessing that He has bestowed on a people unless they change what is in their own souls, and Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing:

  6. 54

Like the precedent of Pharaoh’s clan and those who were before them, who denied the signs of their Lord; so We destroyed them for their sins, and We drowned Pharaoh’s clan; and they were all wrongdoers.

  7. 55

Indeed the worst of beasts in Allah’s sight are those who are faithless; so they will not have faith.

  8. 56

—Those with whom you made a treaty, and who violated their treaty every time, and who are not Godwary.

  9. 57

So if you confront them in battle, treat them [in such a wise] as to disperse those who are behind them, so that they may take admonition.

  10. 58

And if you fear treachery from a people, break off [the treaty] with them in a like manner. Indeed Allah does not like the treacherous.

  11. 59

Let the faithless not suppose that they have outmanoeuvred [Allah]. Indeed, they cannot frustrate [His power].

  12. 60

Prepare against them whatever you can of [military] power and war-horses, awing thereby the enemy of Allah, and your enemy, and others besides them, whom you do not know, but Allah knows them. And whatever you spend in the way of Allah will be repaid to you in full, and you will not be wronged.

  13. 61

If they incline toward peace, then you [too] incline toward it, and put your trust in Allah. Indeed He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing.

  14. 62

But if they desire to deceive you, Allah is indeed sufficient for you. It is He who strengthened you with His help and with the means of the faithful,

  15. 63

and united their hearts. Had you spent all that is in the earth, you could not have united their hearts, but Allah united them together. Indeed He is all-mighty, all-wise.

  16. 64

O Prophet! Sufficient for you is Allah and those of the faithful who follow you.

Synthesis: Sūrat al-Anfāl 49–64 (Six-Source Tafsīr Triangulation)

Sources present (all six non-silent): Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan]; Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan]; Baḥrānī, al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan]; al-Qummī [qummi]; Ṭabāṭabāʾī, al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan]; An Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary]. The Arabic sources were fetched and translated here; al-Mīzān is rendered from verified Arabic. al-Qummī is silent on v.52. Full Arabic in each original_ar.

What the passage says. The hypocrites mock the believers' faith as a delusion (49); the angels seize the disbelievers' souls, striking face and back, "taste the burning" (50–51); their case is "the way of Pharaoh's clan," undone by the law that God withdraws no blessing until a people change themselves (52–54); the worst of creatures are the settled disbelievers (55); the treaty-breakers are to be made an example, and a feared treachery met by an open dissolution "on equal terms" (56–58); the believers must prepare "force and tethered horses" yet incline to peace if the foe inclines (59–61); and God — who strengthened the Prophet "with His help and with the believers" and united their hearts — suffices him (62–64).

The disbelievers' end and the divine law. On 50–51 the sources agree the scene is Badr's slain; [bahrani_al_burhan] notes the Qurʾānic euphemism (cross-referencing Q 6:93), and [qummi] continues the Iblīs narrative (Gabriel's pursuit). For 53 [bahrani_al_burhan] supplies the al-Kāfī principle — God turns from a people only after they turn — while [tabatabai_al_mizan] reads the blessing's withdrawal as a requital of an inward change, and [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] records al-Suddī's application (the blessing of Muḥammad, lost by Quraysh, given to the Anṣār).

Treaty law — and its inner application. On 55–58 [tabatabai_al_mizan], [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and [tusi_al_tibyan] set the plain historical frame: the treaty-breaking Jewish tribes of Medina (Qaynuqāʿ, Naḍīr, Qurayẓa) and the rule that a feared treachery be met by an open, equal renunciation, never a treacherous surprise. Alongside this, the Imāmī narrators read the verses inwardly: [qummi] refers "the worst of beasts… who will not believe" (55) to Banū Umayya "who disbelieved in the bāṭin of the Qurʾān," and both [qummi] and [bahrani_al_burhan] refer "if you fear treachery… throw it back equally" (58) to Muʿāwiya's betrayal of ʿAlī.

Force, peace, and the believers. On 60 the sources converge on the famous gloss — [bahrani_al_burhan] and [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] both cite ʿUqba b. ʿĀmir's "the force is archery (al-ramy)" — while reading ribāṭ al-khayl as the keeping of war-horses. On 61 the plain "incline to peace" of [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and [tabatabai_al_mizan] is paired with [qummi]'s note of abrogation (by Q 47:35) and [bahrani_al_burhan]'s inner reading of salm as "entering the [Imams'] cause." Finally, on 62–64 all read the uniting of the Aws and Khazraj's hearts as a divine sign no wealth could buy ([tabarsi_majma_al_bayan], [qummi], [tusi_al_tibyan], [tabatabai_al_mizan]); [bahrani_al_burhan] adds the narrations — transmitted by Imāmī and named Sunnī authorities alike (Abū Nuʿaym, al-Khaṭīb) — reading "He strengthened you with His help and with the believers" of ʿAlī.
