The verses

  1. 51

O apostles! Eat of the good things and act righteously. Indeed I know best what you do.

  2. 52

Indeed this community of yours is one community, and I am your Lord, so be wary of Me.

  3. 53

But they fragmented their religion among themselves, each party boasting about what it had.

  4. 54

So leave them in their stupor for a while.

  5. 55

Do they suppose that whatever aid We provide them in regard to wealth and children [is because]

  6. 56

We are eager to bring them good? No, they are not aware!

  7. 57

Indeed those who are apprehensive for the fear of their Lord,

  8. 58

and believe in the signs of their Lord,

  9. 59

    وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِرَبِّهِمْ لَا يُشْرِكُونَ

    and do not ascribe partners to their Lord;

  10. 60

who give whatever they give while their hearts tremble with awe that they are going to return to their Lord

  11. 61

—it is they who are zealous in [performing] good works and take the lead in them.

  12. 62

We task no soul except according to its capacity, and with Us is a book that speaks the truth, and they will not be wronged.

  13. 63

Indeed, their hearts are in a stupor in regard to this, and there are other deeds besides which they perpetrate.

  14. 64

When We seize their affluent ones with punishment, behold, they make entreaties [to Us].

  15. 65

‘Do not make entreaties today! Indeed, you will not receive any help from Us.

  16. 66

Certainly My signs used to be recited to you, but you used to take to your heels,

  17. 67

being disdainful of it, talking nonsense in your nightly sessions.’

  18. 68

Have they not contemplated the Discourse, or has anything come to them [in it] that did not come to their forefathers?

  19. 69

Is it that they do not recognize their apostle, and so they deny him?

  20. 70

Do they say, ‘There is madness in him’? No, he has brought them the truth, and most of them are averse to the truth.

  21. 71

Had the truth followed their desires, the heavens and the earth would have surely fallen apart [along] with those who are in them. Indeed, We have brought them their Reminder, but they are disregardful of their Reminder.

  22. 72

Do you ask a recompense from them? Your Lord’s recompense is better, and He is the best of providers.

  23. 73

Indeed you invite them to a straight path,

  24. 74

and those who do not believe in the Hereafter surely deviate from the path.

  25. 75

Should We have mercy upon them and remove their distress, they would surely persist, bewildered in their rebellion.

  26. 76

We have already seized them with punishment, yet they did not humble themselves before their Lord, nor will they entreat [Him for mercy]

  27. 77

until We open on them the gate of a severe punishment, whereupon they will be despondent in it.

Synthesis: Sūrat al-Muʾminūn 51–77

Triangulating Ṭabarsī (Majmaʿ al-Bayān) [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan], al-Qummī [qummi], al-Ṭūsī (al-Tibyān) [tusi_al_tibyan], al-Baḥrānī (al-Burhān) [bahrani_al_burhan], al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī (al-Mīzān) [tabatabai_al_mizan], and the Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary].

Human-review flags: al-Baḥrānī and al-Mīzān are heavily condensed (the Ḥafṣ b. Ghiyāth sermon, the istiṭāʿa cluster, and al-Mīzān's ‹no soul beyond its capacity› and ‹truth follows desire› discussions). al-Mīzān is rendered from the fetched Arabic, not the published Tawus Raja English.

What the passage says. The messengers are charged to eat wholesomely and act rightly under one Lord (51–52); humanity fractures into self-satisfied sects (53–54); the deniers wrongly read their wealth and children as a hastening of divine good (55–56), against which stand the true racers in good — the God-fearing, believing, non-associating, who ‹give what they give while their hearts tremble› (57–61); accountability is measured to capacity and recorded in a truth-speaking book (62), while the deniers persist in stupor until seized, pleading uselessly (63–67); their excuses for rejecting the Prophet are dismantled (68–72); he calls to a straight path from which the Hereafter-deniers swerve (73–74); and neither relief nor punishment bends them until a gate of severe torment opens (75–77).

How the present sources read it. On ‹eat of the good things› (51), Ṭabarsī, al-Ṭūsī and al-Mīzān agree it addresses the messengers generally, Ṭabarsī and al-Mīzān adding the Prophetic ḥadīth that Allah accepts only the wholesome; al-Qummī and al-Baḥrānī gloss ‹one community› (52) as 'one way (madhhab).' On the wealth-as-favour illusion (55–56), all read it as istidrāj (a drawing-on), al-Mīzān anchoring it in Q 7:182 and Ṭabarsī citing al-Ṣādiq's ḥadīth that the believer is nearer to God when the world is straitened for him.

The passage's devotional heart is 23:60, ‹who give what they give while their hearts are fearful.› Here the sources converge across the Sunnī–Shīʿī line: the reading is the dutiful-yet-fearful, not the sinner-yet-fearful. Ṭabarsī and al-Mīzān both cite the ʿĀʾisha report (Tirmidhī 3175) in which the Prophet corrects her — it is the one who fasts, prays and gives while fearing non-acceptance, not the one who drinks and steals; al-Ṭūsī and al-Qummī read it of those who give in obedience while fearing their return; and al-Baḥrānī's cluster, crowned by the Ḥafṣ b. Ghiyāth sermon of al-Ṣādiq, sharpens the Imāmī nuance that they render obedience with love and walāya while dreading they fall short in it. al-Qummī and al-Baḥrānī add that ‹those hasten in good works and outstrip to them› (61) is ʿAlī, whom none outstripped (Abū al-Jārūd ← al-Bāqir).

On ‹We task no soul beyond its capacity› (62), al-Ṭūsī reads it polemically against the Mujbira (God does not impose the unbearable), and al-Mīzān expands it into a doctrine of graded belief and the negation of ḥaraj; al-Baḥrānī attaches the great istiṭāʿa cluster — the classic Imāmī amr bayn al-amrayn: the servant is capable with the act, neither compelled (else excused) nor left wholly to himself. On the dismantling of excuses (68–72), Ṭabarsī, al-Ṭūsī and al-Mīzān march in step (the Qurʾān unpondered, the messengership no novelty, the Prophet known and sane, no wage sought), al-Mīzān explicitly numbering the four rebutted pretexts. On ‹had the truth followed their desires› (71), the exoteric sources split — 'the Truth is Allah' (Abū Ṣāliḥ, Ibn Jurayj), or 'truth vs. corrupting desire in the cosmic order' (al-Ṭūsī, al-Mīzān's magnificent reading of the fixed cosmic laws) — while al-Qummī and al-Baḥrānī add the Imāmī baṭn: 'the Truth' is the Prophet and the Commander of the Faithful, and ‹the straight path› (73) and ‹deviate from the path› (74) are the walāya of ʿAlī and swerving from the Imām; al-Mīzān explicitly labels this an esoteric (baṭn) application, not the surface sense.

On the closing punishment (76–77), all read ‹istikāna› and ‹taḍarruʿ› through the Imāmī gloss (submission; the raising of the hands — al-Baḥrānī via Muḥammad b. Muslim, echoed by Ṭabarsī, al-Mīzān), and Ṭabarsī, al-Baḥrānī and al-Mīzān all record al-Bāqir's reading that the ‹gate of severe punishment› is realized in the Return (al-rajʿa), al-Baḥrānī specifying ʿAlī's return.
