O you who have faith! Do not take those who take your religion in derision and play, from among those who were given the Book before you, and the infidels, as friends, and be wary of Allah, should you be faithful.
When you call to prayer, they take it in derision and play. That is because they are a people who do not exercise their reason.
Say, ‘O People of the Book! Are you vindictive toward us for any reason except that we have faith in Allah and in what has been sent down to us, and in what was sent down before, and that most of you are transgressors?’
Say, ‘Shall I inform you concerning something worse than that as a requital from Allah? Those whom Allah has cursed and with whom He is wrathful, and turned some of whom into apes and swine, and worshippers of fake deities! Such are in a worse situation and more astray from the right way.’
When they come to you, they say, ‘We believe.’ Certainly, they enter with disbelief and leave with it, and Allah knows best as to what they have been concealing.
You see many of them actively engaged in sin and aggression, and consuming illicit gains. Surely, evil is what they have been doing.
Why do not the rabbis and the scribes forbid them from sinful speech and consuming illicit gains? Surely, evil is what they have been working.
The Jews say, ‘Allah’s hand is tied up.’ Tied up be their hands, and cursed be they for what they say! No, His hands are wide open: He bestows as He wishes. Surely many of them will be increased in rebellion and unfaith by what has been sent to you from your Lord, and We have cast enmity and hatred amongst them until the Day of Resurrection. Every time they ignite the flames of war, Allah puts them out. They seek to cause corruption on the earth, and Allah does not like the agents of corruption.
Had the People of the Book believed and been Godwary, We would surely have absolved them of their misdeeds and admitted them into gardens of bliss.
Had they observed the Torah and the Evangel, and what was sent down to them from their Lord, they would surely have drawn nourishment from above them and from beneath their feet. There is an upright group among them, but evil is what many of them do.
O Apostle! Communicate that which has been sent down to you from your Lord, and if you do not, you will not have communicated His message, and Allah shall protect you from the people. Indeed Allah does not guide the faithless lot.
Say, ‘O People of the Book! You do not stand on anything until you observe the Torah and the Evangel and what was sent down to you from your Lord.’ Surely many of them will be increased in rebellion and unfaith by what has been sent down to you from your Lord. So do not grieve for the faithless lot.
Indeed the faithful, the Jews, the Sabaeans, and the Christians—those who have faith in Allah and the Last Day and act righteously—they will have no fear, nor will they grieve.
Certainly We took a pledge from the Children of Israel, and We sent apostles to them. Whenever an apostle brought them that which was not to their liking, they would impugn a part of them, and a part they would slay.
They supposed there would be no testing, so they became blind and deaf. Thereafter Allah accepted their repentance, yet [again] many of them became blind and deaf, and Allah watches what they do.
They are certainly faithless who say, ‘Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary.’ But the Messiah had said, ‘O Children of Israel! Worship Allah, my Lord, and your Lord. Indeed whoever ascribes partners to Allah, Allah shall forbid him [entry into] paradise, and his refuge shall be the Fire, and the wrongdoers will not have any helpers.’
They are certainly faithless who say, ‘Allah is the third [person] of a trinity,’ while there is no god except the One God. If they do not relinquish what they say, there shall befall the faithless among them a painful punishment.
Will they not repent to Allah and plead to Him for forgiveness? Yet Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
The Messiah, son of Mary, is but an apostle. Certainly, [other] apostles have passed before him, and his mother was a truthful one. Both of them would eat food. Look how We clarify the signs for them, and yet, look, how they go astray!
Say, ‘Do you worship, besides Allah, what has no power to bring you any benefit or harm, while Allah—He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing?!’
Say, ‘O People of the Book! Do not unduly exceed the bounds in your religion and do not follow the fancies of a people who went astray in the past, and led many astray, and [themselves] strayed from the right path.’
English translation: Ali Quli Qarai
Sources present: Ṭabarsī, Majmaʿ al-Bayān [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan]; Ṭūsī, al-Tibyān [tusi_al_tibyan]; Baḥrānī, al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan]; al-Qummī [qummi]; Ṭabāṭabāʾī, al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan]; An Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary]. All six present.
The passage forbids befriending those who mock the religion (57–58), answers the People of the Book (59–60), exposes the hypocrites and the lawless among them (61–63), refutes the Jewish blasphemy "God's hand is fettered" while promising abundance to those who uphold their scriptures (64–66), commands the Prophet to convey what was revealed under divine protection (67–68), and refutes the divinity of Christ and the Trinity (72–77).
1. Mockers and the prohibition of alliance (57–63). All read 57–58 as forbidding alliance with those who mock the faith and its call to prayer. [enlightening_commentary] notes that prayer is the emblem of the religion, so to mock it is to mock the faith; [tabatabai_al_mizan] sets the passage within the chapter's covenant theme. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and [tusi_al_tibyan] gloss the "apes and swine" and the two-faced hypocrites; [bahrani_al_burhan] ties the cursed of 60 and the "astray" of 77 to the Opening's "those who incurred wrath" (Jews) and "those who went astray" (Christians), and names the hypocrite of 61 as Ibn Ubayy, preserving al-Bāqir's rebuke on 63.
2. "God's hand is fettered" (64). All reject the literal sense: [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan], [tusi_al_tibyan] and [tabatabai_al_mizan] read it as Jewish blasphemy met by "both His hands are outspread." [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] specify that the saying meant "God has finished with the affair and creates nothing anew," refuted by His effacing and confirming — grounding the doctrine of badāʾ and divine will.
3. Upholding the scriptures (65–66). All hold that had they believed and upheld the Torah, Gospel "and what was revealed," abundance would have come "from above and beneath." [bahrani_al_burhan] (several chains of al-Bāqir) and [qummi] gloss "what was revealed to them" as al-walāya; [qummi] reads the extinguished war-fire as God's crushing of every tyrant who sought the ruin of the Family of Muḥammad, and [bahrani_al_burhan] preserves ʿAlī's debate with the bishop on the one saved "moderate community."
4. The verse of conveyance (67–68). All read 67 as God's command that the Prophet deliver his message under divine protection. [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] carry the Ghadīr narrations: the last of the five obligations — the walāya of ʿAlī — was revealed near the Farewell Pilgrimage with "Today I have perfected your religion," whereupon 67 commanded its proclamation and the Prophet took ʿAlī's hand at Ghadīr Khumm; both likewise read 68's "you stand on nothing until you uphold…" as that same walāya.
5. The refutation of Christ's divinity and the Trinity (72–77). All read 72–77 as refuting "God is the Messiah" and "the third of three": the Messiah himself called to worship God alone; he is "only a messenger," his mother a truthful woman (ṣiddīqa), and "both ate food" — which [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] gloss as a delicate proof of their creaturely need. [tusi_al_tibyan] and [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] identify the sects and expound God's oneness, while [tabatabai_al_mizan] and [enlightening_commentary] develop the doctrinal refutation (their full treatments are preserved in the record). All read 77 as forbidding excess in religion.
[enlightening_commentary] and [tabatabai_al_mizan] supply the structural and doctrinal frame — covenant-fidelity, the emblem of prayer, and the rebuttal of Trinitarian theology — while the four Arabic sources add the credal and grammatical detail, and [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] the badāʾ reading of 64 and the walāya/Ghadīr narrations on 66–68. No source is silent for this passage.
