The verses

  1. 60

The charities are only for the poor and the needy, and those employed to collect them, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and for [the freedom of] the slaves and the debtors, and in the way of Allah, and for the traveller. [This is] an ordinance from Allah, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.

  2. 61

Among them are those who torment the Prophet, and say, ‘He is an ear.’ Say, ‘An ear that is good for you. He has faith in Allah and trusts the faithful, and is a mercy for those of you who have faith.’ As for those who torment the Apostle of Allah, there is a painful punishment for them.

  3. 62

They swear to you by Allah, to please you; but Allah and His Apostle are worthier that they should please Him, should they be faithful.

  4. 63

Do they not know that whoever opposes Allah and His Apostle, there awaits him the Fire of hell, to remain in it [forever]? That is the great disgrace.

  5. 64

The hypocrites are apprehensive lest a surah should be sent down against them, informing them about what is in their hearts. Say, ‘Go on deriding. Allah will indeed bring out what you are apprehensive of.’

  6. 65

If you question them [regarding their conduct], they will surely say, ‘We were just gossiping and amusing ourselves.’ Say, ‘Were you deriding Allah, His signs, and His apostles?

  7. 66

Do not make excuses. You have disbelieved after your faith.’ If We forgive a group among you, We will punish another group, for they have been guilty.

  8. 67

The hypocrites, men and women, are all alike: they bid what is wrong and forbid what is right; and are tight-fisted. They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them. The hypocrites are indeed the transgressors.

  9. 68

Allah has promised the hypocrites, men and women, and the faithless, the Fire of hell, to remain in it [forever]. That suffices them. Allah has cursed them, and there is a lasting punishment for them.

  10. 69

[Hypocrites! Your case is] similar to those who were before you, who were more powerful than you and more abounding in wealth and children: they enjoyed their share [of worldly existence]; you too enjoy your share, just like those who were before you enjoyed their share, and you have gossiped [impiously] as they gossiped. They are the ones whose works have failed in this world and the Hereafter; and it is they who are the losers.

  11. 70

Has there not come to them the account of those who were before them—the people of Noah, ‘Ad, and Tham£d, and the people of Abraham, the inhabitants of Midian, and the towns that were overturned? Their apostles brought them manifest proofs. So it was not Allah who wronged them, but it was they who used to wrong themselves.

  12. 71

But the faithful, men and women, are comrades of one another: they bid what is right and forbid what is wrong and maintain the prayer, give the zakat, and obey Allah and His Apostle. It is they to whom Allah will soon grant His mercy. Indeed Allah is all-mighty, all-wise.

  13. 72

Allah has promised the faithful, men and women, gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever], and good dwellings in the Gardens of Eden. Yet Allah’s pleasure is greater [than all these]; that is the great success.

  14. 73

O Prophet! Wage jihad against the faithless and the hypocrites, and be severe with them. Their refuge shall be hell, and it is an evil destination.

  15. 74

They swear by Allah that they did not say it. But they certainly did utter the word of unfaith and renounced faith after their Islam. They contemplated what they could not achieve, and they were vindictive only because Allah and His Apostle had enriched them out of His grace. Yet if they repent, it will be better for them; but if they turn away, Allah shall punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and they shall not find on the earth any guardian or helper.

  16. 75

Among them are those who made a pledge with Allah: ‘If He gives us out of His grace, we will surely give the zakat and we will surely be among the righteous.’

  17. 76

But when He gave them out of His grace, they begrudged it and turned away, being disregardful.

  18. 77

So He caused hypocrisy to ensue in their hearts until the day they will encounter Him, because of their going back on what they had promised Allah and because of the lies they used to tell.

  19. 78

Do they not know that Allah knows their secret [thoughts] and [hears] their secret talks, and that Allah is knower of all that is Unseen?

  20. 79

Those who blame the voluntary donors from among the faithful concerning the charities—and as for those who do not find [anything] except [what] their means [permit], they ridicule them—Allah shall put them to ridicule, and there is a painful punishment for them.

  21. 80

Whether you plead forgiveness for them or do not plead forgiveness for them, even if you plead forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah shall never forgive them because they defied Allah and His Apostle; and Allah does not guide the transgressing lot.

Synthesis: Sūrat al-Tawba 60–80 (Six-Source Tafsīr Triangulation)

Sources present (all six non-silent): Ṭabarsī, Majmaʿ al-Bayān; Ṭūsī, al-Tibyān; Baḥrānī, al-Burhān; al-Qummī, Tafsīr al-Qummī; Ṭabāṭabāʾī, al-Mīzān; An Enlightening Commentary. The five Arabic sources were fetched and translated here from their verified Arabic; the Enlightening Commentary is reproduced from its published English. Apparatus is condensed with disclosure; full Arabic is preserved in each original_ar.

What the passage says. It fixes the eight lawful channels of the alms (60); then returns to the hypocrites — those who injure the Prophet and call him "an ear" (61–63); those who mocked, fearing a sūra would expose them, and "disbelieved after their faith" (64–66); the hypocrite men and women set against the believing men and women, the allies (awliyāʾ) of one another (67–72); the command to strive against the disbelievers and hypocrites (73); the conspirators who "said the word of disbelief" and "resolved upon what they could not attain" (74); those who broke their covenant of alms (75–78); the slanderers of the givers (79); and the refusal of forgiveness though sought "seventy times" (80).

The eight categories of zakat (v. 60). This is the passage's legal core. Qummī and Baḥrānī preserve the canonical Imāmī definitions (← al-Ṣādiq): the poor (fuqarāʾ) who do not beg yet bear dependents' costs (per 2:273); the needy (masākīn), the chronically disabled; the collectors; those whose hearts are reconciled (muʾallafa) — defined (← al-Bāqir) as those who affirm God's unity but still doubt some of what the Prophet brought, conciliated by a share; the necks (freeing slaves and those owing expiations); the debtors (debts incurred in obedience); "in God's way" (jihad and every public good); and the wayfarer. Baḥrānī adds the Imāmī jurisprudence — the alms-distribution is entrusted to the Imam, "a duty God imposed cannot lack eligible people," and the eligibility thresholds (the man with seven hundred dirhams but many dependents may take; the lone earner with fifty may not). Ṭabarsī and Ṭūsī lay out the broader spectrum on faqīr vs. miskīn and the disputed persistence of the muʾallafa's share (al-Ḥasan: it lapsed after the Prophet; the Imāmīs: it stands given a just Imam). al-Mīzān ranks the masākīn as worse off than the fuqarāʾ, analyzes the shift from "for (li-)" to "in (fī)," and argues "an ordinance from God" fixes the eightfold division itself — not time-bound, since "the need has not been removed."

The "ear" and the etiquette of unity (61–62). On "he is an ear (udhun)," al-Mīzān gives the subtlest reading: "an ear of good" describes the Prophet's listening as a listening of good even toward what is not [true], for he honors the speaker and does not act on a report to harm another — and "he believes the believers" means he grants the credence of the reporter, not of the report (cf. 63:1). Ṭabarsī and Ṭūsī supply the occasions (al-Jallās, Nabtal b. al-Ḥārith). On v. 62, al-Mīzān notes the singular "that He be pleased" is an "etiquette of [divine] unity," guarding God's station from being paired.

The hypocrites' conspiracy (64–74). The sources tie these verses to the ʿAqaba plot on the Tabuk return — the twelve who lay in wait for the Prophet, whom Ḥudhayfa drove off (Ṭabarsī, ← al-Bāqir) — and the mockers whom ʿAmmār confronted, the one pardoned being Makhshī b. Ḥumayyir (Qummī). On v. 73, the Imāmī narrations gloss "strive against… the hypocrites" as "by binding the obligations," since they were not fought by the sword. On v. 74 Qummī and Baḥrānī carry a strongly partisan layer — the covenant "not to return this matter to Banū Hāshim" and a Ghadīr Khumm narration — rendered faithfully as what those works gather, not endorsed, and flagged; these are not in the Sunnī tradition.

The broken covenant, the givers, and the seventy (75–80). All the sources name the occasion of vv. 75–76 as Thaʿlaba b. Ḥāṭib (the needy man who vowed alms then withheld) — but this narration is graded weak/inauthentic by hadith critics (Ibn Ḥajar, al-Dhahabī, who note Thaʿlaba was a veteran of Badr); web-verified and flagged. On v. 79 the occasions are the giver of a single ṣāʿ (Abū ʿAqīl/Sālim) and the abundant giver, both derided. On v. 80, all read the "seventy" as a figure for abundance, not a literal limit (revealed concerning ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy); Qummī and Baḥrānī add the partisan framing that the Prophet's words at his grave were imprecation rather than intercession — flagged.

The tafsīr (6 sources)
