Sūrah 4 · Āyāt 7187

The verses

  1. 71

O you who have faith! Take your precautions, then go forth in companies, or go forth en masse.

  2. 72

Among you is indeed he who drags his feet, and should an affliction visit you, he says, ‘It was certainly Allah’s blessing that I did not accompany them!’

  3. 73

But should a bounty from Allah come to you, he will say—as if there were no [tie of friendship and] affection between you and him—‘I wish I were with them so that I had achieved a great success!’

  4. 74

Let those who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter fight in the way of Allah; and whoever fights in the way of Allah, and then is slain, or he subdues [the enemy], We shall soon give him a great reward.

  5. 75

Why should you not fight in the way of Allah and the oppressed men, women, and children, who say, ‘Our Lord, bring us out of this town whose people are oppressors, and appoint for us a guardian from Yourself, and appoint for us a helper from Yourself’?

  6. 76

Those who have faith fight in the way of Allah, and those who are faithless fight in the way of fake gods. So fight the friends of Satan; indeed the stratagems of Satan are always flimsy.

  7. 77

Have you not regarded those who were told, ‘Keep your hands off [from warfare], and maintain the prayer and give the zakat’? But when fighting was prescribed for them, behold, a part of them feared the people as if fearing Allah, or were even more afraid, and they said, ‘Our Lord! Why did You prescribe fighting for us? Why did You not respite us for a short time?!’ Say, ‘The enjoyments of this world are trifle and the Hereafter is better for the Godwary, and you will not be wronged so much as a single date-thread.

  8. 78

Wherever you may be death will overtake you, even if you were in fortified towers.’ If any good befalls them, they say, ‘This is from Allah;’ and when an ill befalls them, they say, ‘This is from you.’ Say, ‘All is from Allah.’ What is the matter with these people that they would not understand any matter?

  9. 79

Whatever good befalls you is from Allah; and whatever ill befalls you is from yourself. We sent you as an apostle to mankind, and Allah suffices as witness.

  10. 80

Whoever obeys the Apostle certainly obeys Allah; and as for those who turn their backs [on you]; We have not sent you to keep watch over them.

  11. 81

They profess obedience [to you], but when they go out from your presence, a group of them conspire overnight [to do] something other than what you say. But Allah records what they conspire overnight. So disregard them and put your trust in Allah, for Allah suffices as trustee.

  12. 82

Do they not contemplate the Quran? Had it been from [someone] other than Allah, they would have surely found much discrepancy in it.

  13. 83

When a report of safety or alarm comes to them, they immediately broadcast it; but had they referred it to the Apostle or to those vested with authority among them, those of them who investigate would have ascertained it. And were it not for Allah’s grace upon you and His mercy, you would have surely followed Satan, [all] except a few.

  14. 84

So fight in the way of Allah: you are responsible only for yourself, but urge on the faithful [to fight]. Maybe Allah will curb the might of the faithless, for Allah is greatest in might and severest in punishment.

  15. 85

Whoever intercedes for a good cause shall receive a share of it, and whoever intercedes for an evil cause shall share its burden, and Allah is prepotent over all things.

  16. 86

When you are greeted with a salute, greet with a better one than it, or return it; indeed Allah takes account of all things.

  17. 87

Allah—there is no god except Him—will surely gather you on the Day of Resurrection, in which there is no doubt; and who is more truthful in speech than Allah?

✦ Synthesisopus-4.8every claim cited to a source below

Synthesis: Sūrat al-Nisāʾ 71–87 (Six-Source Tafsīr Triangulation)

Sources triangulated: Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan]; Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan]; Baḥrānī, al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan]; al-Qummī [qummi]; Ṭabāṭabāʾī, al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan]; An Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary]. All six are present (non-silent).

The passage rallies the believers to fight in God's cause and for the oppressed (vv.71–76), rebukes those who, once fighting was prescribed, feared people more than God (v.77), insists that death is inescapable and that all befalls by God's decree even as evil is earned by oneself (vv.78–79), binds obedience to the Messenger to obedience to God and exposes the night-plotting hypocrites (vv.80–81), urges pondering the Qurʾān's freedom from discrepancy and the disciplined referral of news to those in authority (vv.82–83), and closes with the duties of fighting, sound intercession and the courteous return of greetings (vv.84–87).

Convergence

1. Fighting for the oppressed (vv.75–76). All sources read the summons as deliverance for the tormented Muslims of Mecca, contrasting the believers who fight 'in God's cause' with the idolaters who fight 'in the cause of ṭāghūt.' [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [tusi_al_tibyan] [qummi] [tabatabai_al_mizan] [enlightening_commentary]

2. The Meccan restraint, later abrogated (v.77). Ṭabarsī, Ṭūsī, al-Qummī and al-Mīzān agree the 'hold your hands' command was Meccan and was superseded by the command to fight at Medina, the laggards' dread being human weakness. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [tusi_al_tibyan] [qummi] [tabatabai_al_mizan]

3. 'From God / from yourself' (vv.78–79). All four Arabic sources reconcile the two verses the same way: ALL — blessing and affliction alike — is 'from God' by creation and decree, while 'what evil befalls you is from yourself' refers to the sins one earns; al-Qummī gives the Ṣādiqs' full two-senses analysis. [qummi] [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [tusi_al_tibyan] [tabatabai_al_mizan]

4. Pondering the Qurʾān (v.82). Ṭabarsī and Ṭūsī draw from 'they would have found much discrepancy' the validity of reasoned proof over blind imitation and the intelligibility of the Qurʾān, a reading the English sources share as a proof of its divine origin. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [tusi_al_tibyan] [tabatabai_al_mizan] [enlightening_commentary]

5. Greetings (v.86). All read the command to return a greeting with a better or equal one, with the special rule for the People of the Book; al-Burhān adds the graded merit of the fuller salām. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [tusi_al_tibyan] [qummi] [bahrani_al_burhan]

Divergence

'Those in authority' and 'God's bounty and mercy' (v.83). While the universal reading (in Ṭabarsī, Ṭūsī, al-Mīzān and the Enlightening Commentary) takes ulī al-amr as the commanders or learned to whom rumours should be referred, al-Qummī and al-Burhān — and the Imāmī layer of Ṭabarsī and Ṭūsī — identify them with the infallible Imāms (the Commander of the Faithful), and gloss 'God's bounty and His mercy' as the Prophet and ʿAlī. [qummi] [bahrani_al_burhan] [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [tusi_al_tibyan] [tabatabai_al_mizan] [enlightening_commentary]

The 'lofty towers' (v.78). al-Qummī alone glosses 'though you be in lofty towers' as the 'three darknesses' of gestation (the placenta, the womb, the belly) — a striking interiorising reading absent from the others, who keep the literal fortresses/palaces. [qummi] [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] [tusi_al_tibyan] These Imāmī readings are recorded here as what the sources transmit, not as endorsed interpretation.
