The verses

  1. 78

The faithless among the Children of Israel were cursed on the tongue of David and Jesus son of Mary. That, because they would disobey and they used to commit transgression.

  2. 79

They would not forbid one another from the wrongs that they committed. Surely, evil is what they had been doing.

  3. 80

You see many of them fraternizing with the faithless. Surely evil is what they have sent ahead for their souls, as Allah is displeased with them and they shall remain in punishment [forever].

  4. 81

Had they believed in Allah and the Prophet and what has been sent down to him, they would not have taken them for allies. But most of them are transgressors.

  5. 82

Surely You will find the most hostile of all people towards the faithful to be the Jews and the polytheists, and surely you will find the nearest of them in affection to the faithful to be those who say ‘We are Christians.’ That is because there are priests and monks among them, and because they are not arrogant.

  6. 83

When they hear what has been revealed to the Apostle, you see their eyes fill with tears because of the truth that they recognize. They say, ‘Our Lord, we believe; so write us down among the witnesses.

  7. 84

Why should we not believe in Allah and the truth that has come to us, eager as we are that our Lord should admit us among the righteous people?’

  8. 85

So, for what they said, Allah requited them with gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever], and that is the reward of the virtuous.

  9. 86

But those who are faithless and deny Our signs—they shall be the inmates of hell.

  10. 87

O you who have faith! Do not prohibit the good things that Allah has made lawful to you, and do not transgress. Indeed Allah does not like the transgressors.

  11. 88

Eat the lawful and good things Allah has provided you, and be wary of Allah in whom you have faith.

  12. 89

Allah shall not take you to task for what is frivolous in your oaths; but He shall take you to task for what you pledge in earnest. The atonement for it is to feed ten needy persons with the average food you give to your families, or their clothing, or the freeing of a slave. He who cannot afford [any of these] shall fast for three days. That is the atonement for your oaths when you vow. But keep your oaths. Thus does Allah clarify His signs for you so that you may give thanks.

  13. 90

O you who have faith! Indeed wine, gambling, idols, and the divining arrows are abominations of Satan’s doing, so avoid them, so that you may be felicitous.

  14. 91

Indeed Satan seeks to cast enmity and hatred among you through wine and gambling, and to hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. Will you, then, relinquish?

  15. 92

And obey Allah and obey the Apostle, and beware; but if you turn your backs, then know that Our Apostle’s duty is only to communicate in clear terms.

  16. 93

There will be no sin upon those who have faith and do righteous deeds in regard to what they have eaten [in the past] so long as they are Godwary and faithful and do righteous deeds, and are further Godwary and faithful, and are further Godwary and virtuous. And Allah loves the virtuous.

✦ Synthesisopus-4.8every claim cited to a source below

Synthesis: Sūrat al-Māʾida 5:78–93 (Six-Source Tafsīr Triangulation)

Sources present: Ṭabarsī, Majmaʿ al-Bayān [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan]; Ṭūsī, al-Tibyān [tusi_al_tibyan]; Baḥrānī, al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan]; al-Qummī [qummi]; Ṭabāṭabāʾī, al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan]; An Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary]. All six present.

The passage closes the rebuke of Israel — cursed on the tongues of David and Jesus for failing to forbid evil (78–81) — contrasts their hostility with the affection of certain Christians who recognize the truth (82–86), forbids self-imposed asceticism and regulates oaths (87–89), prohibits wine, gambling, idols and divining-arrows (90–91), and commands obedience while excusing what was consumed before the prohibition (92–93).

Convergence

1. The curse of Israel (78–81). All read the disbelievers of Israel as cursed by David and Jesus for transgression and for not restraining evil among themselves. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan], [tusi_al_tibyan], [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] carry al-Bāqir/al-Ṣādiq that David's curse turned the Sabbath-breakers of Ayla into apes and Jesus's the Table-deniers into swine; [enlightening_commentary] gives the same. [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] apply "many of them ally with the disbelievers" to those who serve and flatter tyrants; [tabatabai_al_mizan] frames it within the chapter's covenant theme.

2. The nearest in affection (82–86). All contrast Jewish and polytheist hostility with the affection of "those who say we are Christians… among them priests and monks who are not arrogant." [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan], [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] give the occasion of the Najāshī (Negus) of Abyssinia and Jaʿfar's emigrants, whose eyes overflowed at hearing the Qur'an; [tusi_al_tibyan] and [tabatabai_al_mizan] note the alternative that they were Christians firm on Jesus's law who believed.

3. Self-imposed prohibition and oaths (87–89). All read 87 as forbidding the declaring-unlawful of the good things God permitted. [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan], [tusi_al_tibyan], [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] give the occasion — the Companions (ʿAlī, Bilāl, ʿUthmān b. Maẓʿūn and others) who vowed extreme asceticism and were rebuked, "whoever turns from my sunna is not of me" — and expound 89's expiation (the unintended laghw oath versus the contracted oath; feeding or clothing ten needy, freeing a slave, else a three-day fast), with the Imāmī detail on the "average" food.

4. The prohibition of wine and gambling (90–91). All read 90–91 as the decisive prohibition of wine, gambling, idols and divining-arrows as "an abomination of Satan's work." [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] derives the prohibition from four features of the verse; [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] preserve the Prophet's "every intoxicant is khamr and forbidden," the staged revelation, the pouring-out of the date-wine in Medina, and the penalty of flogging (death on the fourth offence), extending maysir to every game of chance.

5. Obedience and the dispensation (92–93). All: 92 commands obedience to God and the Messenger; 93 removes blame for what the believers consumed before the prohibition, on the threefold condition of God-wariness, faith and good works. [tusi_al_tibyan], [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] preserve the case of Qudāma b. Maẓʿūn, where ʿAlī corrected the claim that the verse exempts a later drinker and had the ḥadd of eighty lashes applied.

Distinctive contributions

[enlightening_commentary] and [tabatabai_al_mizan] supply the moral and structural reading — the duty to forbid evil, the openness of the sincere among the People of the Book, and the abomination of intoxication — while the Arabic sources add the legal detail of oaths and the wine-ḥadd, and [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi] the Najāshī narrative and the staged wine-prohibition reports. No source is silent for this passage.
