Certainly the inhabitants of Hijr denied the apostles.
We had given them Our signs but they disregarded them.
They used to hew out dwellings from mountains feeling secure.
So the Cry seized them at dawn,
and what they used to earn did not avail them.
We did not create the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them except with consummate wisdom, and indeed the Hour is bound to come. So forbear with a graceful forbearance.
Indeed your Lord is the All-creator, the All-knowing.
Certainly We have given you [the surah of] the seven oft-repeated verses and the great Quran.
Do not extend your glance toward what We have provided to certain groups of them, and do not grieve for them, and lower your wing to the faithful,
and say, ‘I am indeed a manifest warner [of punishment from God],’
like that We sent down upon those who split into bands,
who represented the Quran as magic.
By your Lord, We will question them all
concerning what they used to do.
So proclaim what you have been commanded, and turn away from the polytheists.
Indeed We will suffice you against the deriders
—those who set up another deity besides Allah. Soon they will know!
Certainly We know that you become upset because of what they say.
So celebrate the praise of your Lord and be among those who prostrate,
and worship your Lord until certainty comes to you.

Triangulated across Ṭabarsī (Majmaʿ al-Bayān) [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan], al-Qummī [qummi], al-Ṭūsī (al-Tibyān) [tusi_al_tibyan], al-Baḥrānī (al-Burhān) [bahrani_al_burhan], al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī (al-Mīzān) [tabatabai_al_mizan], and the published Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary]. All six are present for this passage.
Human-review flags: al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan] is flagged
needs_human_reviewbecause its two long digressions — the Jabr/Tafwīḍ aside (vv. 85) and the closing philosophical appendix on the perpetuity of taklīf (vv. 99) — are condensed, not rendered verbatim, and one of its two units (49–84) lies mostly outside this passage; only its Aṣḥāb-al-Ḥijr tail was translated.
What the passage says. The unit seals the sūra's punishment-narratives with Thamūd — "the inhabitants of al-Ḥijr" — who hewed secure homes in the rock yet were seized by the Cry at dawn (80–84). It then pivots to consolation and command: creation is "in truth" and the Hour certain, so the Prophet must "forbear with a graceful forbearance" (85–86); he is reminded of "the seven oft-repeated and the Grand Qurʾān" (87); given four directives (88–89); warned of "the dividers" who shredded the Qurʾān (90–93); and finally ordered to proclaim openly and turn from the idolaters, assured "We suffice you against the mockers" (94–96), closing with worship "until certainty comes" (97–99).
Aṣḥāb al-Ḥijr. The sources are unanimous (web-confirmed) that these are Thamūd, the people of Ṣāliḥ, in the rock-city al-Ḥijr. al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan] explains the plural "messengers" (though only Ṣāliḥ was sent) by the principle that "the call of the messengers is one"; al-Qummī [qummi] and al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan] note their watered town and refer the full story to Sūrat Hūd.
"Graceful forbearance" and the abrogation question. Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan] both report the dispute: Ibn ʿAbbās, Qatāda, Mujāhid, al-Ḍaḥḥāk held 85 abrogated by the sword-verse; al-Ḥasan held it un-abrogated, governing the personal (not the jihād) relation. al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī [tabatabai_al_mizan] argues against abrogation: since 88–89 gloss the forbearance as a still-operative ethic, it "remains firm even after the sword-verse." All four Shīʿī works converge on ʿAlī's / al-Riḍā's gloss "pardon without rebuke" — al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan] gives it with a Faḍḍāl isnād, al-Mīzān cites the same via al-ʿUyūn and the Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary] attributes it to Imām al-Riḍā.
The seven oft-repeated. A clear agreement-with-texture: the dominant reading (web-confirmed as the majority view) is al-Fātiḥa. Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan] lay out the alternatives (the seven long sūras; the whole Qurʾān per 39:23) with the competing rationales for "mathānī"; al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan] decisively prefers al-Fātiḥa, taking "min" as partitive and deriving "mathānī" from verses "folding upon" one another. al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan] preserves Muḥammad b. Muslim's ḥadīth confirming al-Fātiḥa (with the Basmala "the best of them"), but uniquely adds the esoteric Imāmī layer — Abū Jaʿfar's "we are the mathānī … the Face of God," and readings equating the seven with the Imāms and al-Qāʾim (including a non-codical variant); these are rendered as transmitted, not endorsed.
The mockers (al-mustahziʾūn). The narrative heart, where the four Shīʿī sources interlock. Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan], Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan], al-Qummī [qummi], and al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan] all name five Qurayshīs — al-Walīd b. al-Mughīra (al-Makhzūmī), al-ʿĀṣ b. Wāʾil (al-Sahmī), al-Aswad b. ʿAbd Yaghūth (al-Zuhrī), al-Aswad b. al-Muṭṭalib, and al-Ḥārith b. al-Ṭalāṭila — each dying grotesquely in a single day at Gabriel's gesture (web-confirmed standard list; minor name-variants, e.g. al-Ḥārith b. Ḥanẓala / b. Qays / the nisba Thaqafī vs Khuzāʿī, preserved verbatim). al-Qummī and al-Burhān embed this in the three-year concealed daʿwa, Abū Ṭālib's defense and ode, the boycott document, and the Farewell-Pilgrimage al-Abṭaḥ ḥadīth; al-Burhān adds the long ʿAlī–Jewish-rabbi debate from al-Ṭabrisī's al-Iḥtijāj (web-confirmed a distinct work by Aḥmad b. ʿAlī al-Ṭabrisī).
The dividers and "certainty." On "the dividers" (90–91), al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan] argues forcefully — against the Jews/Christians reading found in a Sunnī report — that the Meccan context requires Qurayshī obstructors who fragmented the Qurʾān ("sorcery / tales / forgery"); al-Burhān's [bahrani_al_burhan] "they are Quraysh" (Zurāra, Ḥumrān, Muḥammad b. Muslim) supports him, while Ṭabarsī [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and Ṭūsī [tusi_al_tibyan] preserve both options. On 99, all converge: "certainty" = death (Ibn ʿAbbās, al-Ḥasan, Mujāhid), so worship is lifelong; al-Mīzān and the Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary] both refute the antinomian misreading that certainty ends obligation, noting the Prophet — already of perfect certainty — worshipped to the last.
