The verses

In the name of Allah, the All-Beneficent, the All-Merciful

  1. 1

Alif, Lam, Mim, Ra. These are the signs of the Book. That which has been sent down to you from your Lord is the truth, but most people do not believe [in it].

  2. 2

It is Allah who raised the heavens without any pillars that you see, and then presided over the Throne. He disposed the sun and the moon, each moving for a specified term. He directs the command, [and] elaborates the signs that you may be certain of encountering your Lord.

  3. 3

It is He who has spread out the earth and set in it firm mountains and streams, and of every fruit in it He has made two kinds. He draws the night’s cover over the day. There are indeed signs in that for a people who reflect.

  4. 4

In the earth are neighbouring terrains [of diverse kinds] and vineyards, farms, and date palms growing from the same root and from diverse roots, [all] irrigated by the same water, and We give some of them an advantage over others in flavour. There are indeed signs in that for people who exercise their reason.

  5. 5

If you are to wonder [at anything], then wonderful is their remark, ‘When we have become dust, shall we be [ushered] into a new creation?’ They are the ones who defy their Lord; they shall have iron collars around their necks, they shall be the inhabitants of the Fire, and they shall remain in it [forever].

  6. 6

They would press you for evil sooner than for good, though there have already gone by before them exemplary punishments. Indeed your Lord is forgiving to mankind despite their wrongdoing, and indeed your Lord is severe in retribution.

Sūrat al-Raʿd 1–6 — Six-Source Triangulation

Present sources: Ṭabarsī, Majmaʿ al-Bayān [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan]; Ṭūsī, al-Tibyān [tusi_al_tibyan]; al-Qummī, Tafsīr al-Qummī [qummi]; Ṭabāṭabāʾī, al-Mīzān [tabatabai_al_mizan] (Arabic original, translated here); al-Baḥrānī, al-Burhān [bahrani_al_burhan]. Silent this passage: An Enlightening Commentary [enlightening_commentary] — al-islam.org was behind a Cloudflare bot-challenge for the whole run and could not be retrieved; it is marked silent, never reconstructed.

What the passage says. After the disjointed letters Al-Mr, the sūra declares that what was revealed to the Prophet "is the truth," though most reject it (v.1). It then marshals the cosmic order as proof of one Lord: heavens raised without visible pillars, the Throne, the subjected sun and moon each running to a "named term," the direction of the affair and the elaboration of signs "that you may be certain of meeting your Lord" (v.2); the spread earth, its mountains, rivers and paired fruits, and the veiling of day by night (v.3); neighbouring tracts and varied palms and vines "watered by one water" yet unequal in produce (v.4). It closes on the deniers of resurrection with fetters on their necks (v.5) and those who mockingly demand the "evil" (punishment) be hastened, met by a Lord "full of forgiveness … [yet] severe in punishment" (v.6).

Tawḥīd of lordship, not merely a Maker. The most distinctive reading is [tabatabai_al_mizan]'s: the whole argument aims at rubūbiyya (oneness of lordship), not at proving a Creator, because the idolaters already conceded one Creator but parcelled out governance among many "lords." Hence "each running to a named term / He directs the affair" proves one connected governance and so one Director; and "without pillars that you see" is a device to rouse the innate nature (fiṭra) to seek the cause — not a denial of secondary causes, which run uniformly under God. He isolates two complementary proofs: unity-in-multiplicity (connected governance, vv.2–3) and multiplicity-in-unity (one soil and water, unequal fruits, v.4). [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] and [tusi_al_tibyan] frame the same verses more as a summons from unbelief to knowledge of God, both drawing the creedal conclusion that the passage establishes "the obligation of reasoned enquiry and the invalidity of blind imitation (taqlīd)" — Ṭūsī adding the anti-ṭabīʿa (blind-nature) polemic explicitly at v.4: identical soil and water yielding differing tastes can only mean a knowing, wise Governor.

Points of convergence. On "without pillars that you see," all three discursive sources ([tabarsi_majma_al_bayan], [tusi_al_tibyan], [tabatabai_al_mizan]) report the two classic parsings — no visible props at all, versus "pillars you cannot see" — Ṭūsī and Ṭabarsī citing Ibn ʿAbbās/Mujāhid and al-Jubbāʾī's grammatical objection. On the "named term" they agree it is the world's end, noting Ibn ʿAbbās's alternative (the stations of sun and moon). All identify the deniers of v.5 as the resurrection-rejecting "materialists (dahriyya) of Quraysh" — a phrase [qummi] and [bahrani_al_burhan] use verbatim.

The narrative layer. [bahrani_al_burhan] and [qummi], and the baḥth riwāʾī of [tabatabai_al_mizan], converge on two traditions: (a) al-Ṣādiq's gloss that Al-Mr means "I am God, the Giver of life and death, the Provider" (Burhān), beside al-Bāqir's abjad-and-eschatology exposition to Abū Labīd; and (b) the ḥadīth of Jābir — "people are from diverse trees; I and ʿAlī are from one tree" — recited over v.4, transmitted through both Shīʿī and (via al-Durr al-Manthūr) Sunnī chains, which Ṭabarsī also cites. [bahrani_al_burhan] alone preserves al-Riḍā's cosmological ḥadīth reconciling "the heaven woven to the earth" with "without pillars that you see" ("there are pillars, but you do not see them"), and the seven-earth schema in which "the command descends" to the Messenger and, after him, the standing Legatee. On v.6 both [bahrani_al_burhan] (al-Riḍā, from al-Ṣādiq) and [tabarsi_majma_al_bayan] (via the Prophet's saying reported by Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab) read "forgiveness … despite their wrongdoing" as scriptural refutation of the Muʿtazilī denial that grave sins can be forgiven without repentance — Ṭabarsī crediting al-Sharīf al-Murtaḍā with the inference.

On v.7's "guide." Ṭabarsī's block runs into v.7 ("you are only a warner, and for every people a guide"); he records four views (the Prophet as warner and God as Guide; a guiding prophet for each people; every caller to truth) and the tradition "I am the warner, and ʿAlī is the guide after me." This is carried here for completeness but belongs thematically to the next passage. No claim above rests on the silent Enlightening Commentary.
